This book provides a lot of helpful information for writers, although it is designed primarily for novelists, book and magazine writers. Bloggers, technical writers, journalists, and other types of writers may find some of the information provided in this book helpful. If you're looking to publish books, novels, or magazine articles, this book is worth buying.

Essential resource for writers

Excellent resource for writers. Having the hard copy is especially good for jotting down notes as you research magazines and publishers. If your goal is to get published, buy this and get to know the market. I find it indispensable as I prepare to submit queries and articles to editor's and publishers. Lots of helpful information with regard to word counts, websites, what they'll pay for accepted/published submissions. Good investment!

Great for learning or as a reference.

I used the first edition of Anderson's Atlas of Hematology during my Hematology course of my medical laboratory science program and loved it. This edition is even better. Many of the pictures are now higher quality, and more time was put into the descriptions of the cells and disorders. I liked that both the FAB and WHO classification systems were used for leukemias. Not only is this a great book for learning practical Hematology, but it is also a great reference in clinical practice. I refer to it often when I come across a tricky cell while doing manual differentials. Maybe I'm a bit of a Hematology nerd, but I really like this book. That being said, if you already have the first edition, it would be completely understandable if you didn't want to spend the money on the new one. They are both great books. The second one is just a little more updated.

Gift for graduating FNP

Gift for my sister-in-law who love particularly loves hematology and just graduated and became licensed as an FNP. She loved it. Great book, but very heavy and floppy. It should be a hard back to protect it, but I see how the spiral helps it lay flat open for research purposes. The edges of the pages got bent before we could even give it to her because of the floppiness. There's no good way to "wrap it" without putting it in a sturdy box and filling it with bubble wrap. I hope it holds up. Also the pictures seemed slightly blurry… but I guess they're still clear enough to be useful!

Literature IS evil.

Bataille conducts a review of several authors with relation to evil, and whether or not all of literature could potentially be evil or just certain authors. He has wry, cogent remarks such as "Her short life was only moderately unhappy." Bataille writes to the part of the brain that is emotional, as well as the analytical, and is all the much better for that - but if you expect philosophy to be dry as dust, you'll wonder how he could be called a philosopher instead of the literary equivalent of a panderer.

Georges Battaille throws down a challange to Jean-Paul Sartre, who held that "literature is inncocent". Bataille, in his examination of such figures as Emily Bronte, Sade, Baudelaire, Genet, Kafka and Michelet, and the component of "evil" in their works, argues that literature is, in fact, "guilty" and that, moreover, it must acknowledge itself as such. In his reading of these literary figures, Bataille proceeds to analyse literature's complicity with evil and how this enables it reach a fuller level of communication. Drawing on Freud, he "eroticises" literary creativity and contends that the notion of "Art for art's sake", which emerges as a reaction to a fragmented and reified social world dominated by utilitarianism and commodity fetishism, is actually a subterfuge, literature masquerading as innocent under the mantle of "pure art", in order to rechannel the forces that are dammed up owing to the repressions imposed by culture. Though elliptical and opaque, this book is a challenging and fascinating study, which has a potential for laying the foundations for a philosophy of composition that underwrites the aesthetic of evil and explores its relation to the overarching forces of institutional and administrative surveillance.

The Death Drive in literature

In this short (and at times very difficult) collection of essays, Bataille challenges Sartre's view that "literature is innocent". A selective survey of key writers - including Bronte, Genet and Sade - shows that literature is a necessary antidote to the overarching Superego and Capitalism's emphasis on the Reality Principle. In this way, Bataille shows that literture is in fact evil, in that it is anti-utilitiarian and thus embedded in the childish Pleasure Principle. While Bataille seems to alternate between ascribing the driving force of literature to both the Life Drive (Eros) and the Death Drive (Thanatos), he does succeed in showing how Freud - although he never explicitely invokes the name - can be used for a new method of reading literature.

Thorough & enjoyably informative complement to an eye-opening exhibition

Excellent - and thorough - catalogue of a stellar exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, one of the Met's best ever. Informative but in an easy way that would satisfy scholar and lay-person alike. Objects are in a never before - and probably never again - exhibit which can't even travel to the UK. Exhibition - & catalogue - open up a world not often written about - the Deccan Plateau of India - during the reign of the independent sultans.
Land of diamonds (some are 90 carats!) and fascinating architecture, the works are placed in the context of unusual styles of painting, and artisanry: marbled paper, decoupe-work (paper cut to make designs, then glued on paper surfaces); inlaid metal and other eye-openers - which one might miss were it not for the excellent descriptions. whether you saw the exhibit or not - this is a prize for anyone's collection of art - specially Indian art.

Marvellous

I have read many pain books but this one is exceptional.
One author and a lot of very good illustrations.
Today must textbooks are written by an exaggerated number of authors with no coherence. This one is an exception. I would like to be able to write a similar book on orofacial pain. I am working on it.
Must pain textbooks are, in my opinion, written by authors who do not alleviate persons in pain, but dedicated to pain research.
It is a beautiful book for the paper used, the very good illustrations, the up to date knowledge in pain research.
It was, for me, very interesting to see the first book with no references at all. It is one author book, who undoubtedly is a clinician, who wants to teach us about how to alleviate pain in the real world.
