Genghis Khan?

The year was 1179. A teenager named Temujin slept soundly in his felt-walled tent alongside his wife, Borte.

The round tent, called a ger, stood alone at the edge of the steppe—a region of vast, flat grasslands in Mongolia. Temujin and Borte shared this ger with family and friends. Together, they formed a small clan of thirteen people.

Most clans lived close together, forming communities of thousands called tribes. But Temujin’s clan lived alone and isolated.

An old woman was awakened by vibrations in the ground.

Hoofbeats. Coming closer.

She screamed for everyone to wake up. Someone was coming!

Three hundred men on horseback from the Merkid tribe raced toward Temujin’s ger. Eighteen years earlier, Temujin’s father—a man named Yesugei—had kidnapped his mother from her Merkid husband. Now Temujin was grown, with a wife of his own. The Merkid wanted revenge.

Yeah, be careful of this book. There are a few disturbing scenes. Lots of beheadings. Nasty stuff done with the heads, also.

One may disagree about a small number of years here and there, but Jodell Onstott has presented a vast amount of data, which undoubtedly show that the late date currently held by most scholars is truly untenable. Sheer volume of information is MIND BLOWING!

This book is quite overwhelming. If you don't understand Israel's responsibility to God and God's responsibility to Israel through the covenants that they both willingly entered into you need look no further. I can see why this was 16 years in the making. Torah is not as complicated as most make it out to be. Onstott systematically breaks down each covenant and then goes into great detail explaining why and how it benefits man through natural, physical, and spiritual law. Onstott makes the complicated easily digestable. This book has been a game changer for me and it came right a pivotal point in my life. The sheer volume of information in one place is mind blowing. "YHWH EXIST" absolutely should to be required reading in every college and university religion and theology department. This is a college course all by itself. I can't honestly see how Onstott or any other biblical scholar or theologian could top this. Game changer is an understatement! Can't wait for volume 2!

The Prophetic Times of the Testimonial Law

A very interesting section of this book to me is Chapter 14, "The Testimonial Law." Here is how it is introduced:
"The covenants that YHWH contracted with Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were combined into a chronological Prophetic Law in the books of Leviticus and Deuteronomy. ...While the Ten Commandments constituted the Stipulation for Israel’s covenant, the blessings and curses formed a chronological Law that all prophecies followed. It was the formal covenant treaty that formed the nation’s Testimony, and more specifically the Testimony referred to the blessing and cursing portions of the Law (Isa 8:20). For this reason I have also termed the Testimony the 'Prophetic Law.'”
The prophetic pattern of these laws is laid down in Leviticus 23 to Leviticus 26, cycles of SEVEN TIMES. Seven times seven days are numbered in Leviticus 23. Seven times seven years are numbered in Leviticus 25. And seven times cycles of national punishments are elaborated in Leviticus 26.
Jodell Onstott's major new work on the history, covenants and constitution of ancient Israel, by coincidence, has a publication date of May 24; in 2015, the day on the Hebrew calendar that is counted 49 days or 7 "complete weeks/sevens," from Passover to Shavuot. The command to count 49 days "from the morrow after the Sabbath during Passover week," and observe an annual Sabbath on the 50th day is given in Leviticus 23:15-22, JUST PRIOR to the Jubilee year commandment in Leviticus 25. In my mind, they are linked! There is a correspondence between the seven "times" of days counted to the celebration of Shavuot, and the seven "times" of years counted to the Jubilee Year. I have long wondered, is this not a prophetic message in time?! The question is, what is the message? And WHEN is the Jubilee year?
In Chapter 14, Jodell Onstott provides more information and new perspectives on this topic. We are introduced to the SEVEN TIMES punishments of the Covenant elaborated in Leviticus 26. Jodell Onstott traces these seven times punishments in the history of ancient Israel, and harmonizes them with the curses of Deuteronomy 28-29. The judgments testify to the claims of the Covenant Israel willingly entered. "The testimony defines the judgments God will perform to limit the nations wickedness" (p.697).
One of the icons of America is the Liberty Bell, on which is inscribed from the Torah of Moses: "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof." The verse is from Leviticus 25:10. The entire chapter of Leviticus 25 establishes the seven-year land rests and the fiftieth year Jubilee of redemption from servitude and debts. The Liberty Bell was commissioned in 1751 to commemorate the 50-year anniversary of William Penn's 1701 Charter of Privileges, Pennsylvania's original Constitution. The fundamental concepts of Redemption, Freedom, Liberty and Constitutional Law are drawn from the Testimonial Law of Moses and its prophetic institutions carefully researched and presented in Chapter 14 of Jodell Onstott's comprehensive book.

A Substantial, Serious, and Formidable Work

This is a substantial book, a serious and formidable work, by a non-specialist who devoted over a decade to sorting through the academic and scholarly discussions and controversies dealing with the historical and archaeological evidence related to the texts of the Hebrew Bible. Is there evidence for the biblical Exodus? What are we to make of the various chronologies of the ancient world compared and contrasted with those in the Hebrew Bible and Greek Septuagint? Is the Torah a unified whole or a composite product stemming from many sources? How might the laws of the Torah be interpreted and do they have any relevance in our modern world? What about the various covenants found therein? How do the prophetic portions of the Torah and the Hebrew Bible as a whole fit in with the legislative foundation and the unfolding history of the people of Israel? The book is beautifully produced and professionally laid out, abundantly illustrated, with 300 pages of charts, notes, bibliography, and index. Given its size (over 1100 pages!) and substantial contents the price, that some might consider "high," is actually very reasonable.

This textbook is an outstanding review of the rapidly expanding field of chiropractic pediatrics. A large population of parents are disturbed and frustrated by the contemporary medical management of functional childhood health problems (ear infections, immune system weaknesses, antibiotic-overuse, colic and bowel infirmities, scoliosis treatments, and the common head and neck, low back and hip, arm and leg pains so common in children). This book presents the finest offerings from the leaders in the chiropractic profession regarding the science of the management of childhood illnesses. Strauss's clearly written text first introduces the concept of a family tree for all living things, then goes on to name the five kingdoms of scientific classification (those programmed for "Protists" will have to adapt to "Protoctista" here). On two-page spreads, the author describes the life-forms included in each species, with specific examples shown in the softly colorful illustrations accompanied by informative captions. The Animal Kingdom comprises the longest segment as it is broken down into invertebrates and vertebrates, with the latter divided still further into fish, birds, and so on. Two closing units discuss habitat loss and its effect on biodiversity, and how one can protect the environment. A final entry aimed at "Parents, Teachers and Guardians" explains the history of scientific classification, discusses the importance of biodiversity to this planet, and provides some suggestions for fostering a biodiversity ethic in young people. This useful, attractive, oversize volume uses its height well, employing a tree metaphor to show the earth's biodiversity and how all living things, from bacteria to the largest mammals, are related. Each spread covers one branch of the animal kingdom. To make the enormity of species understandable, Strauss equates individual species (e.g., 10,000 bacteria) with one leaf on the tree. Since only a couple of paragraphs are devoted to each species (a bit more information appears in captions), this is strictly an overview. But the eye-catching, painterly artwork, with various life-forms painted into the tree, invites children to look more closely than they might have otherwise. Concluding spreads consider the disappearance of some species and how readers can become stewards of the earth. You Can Remember That, Can't You?

The two most fundamental areas of study in modern biology are evolution and taxonomy. I will save a discussion of evolution for another day. But here we have Rochell Strauss's _Tree of Life: The Incredible Biodiversity of Life on Earth_ (2004), which deals with taxonomy-- the classification of living things. Now Strauss knows that _eventually_ taxonomy becomes legalistically complicated. But she also knows that _initially_ it is quite simple. Any kid can learn the basics. Hell, so can a lot of adults.

You've got this tree of life, see, and it's got five main branches or kingdoms: Monera (bacteria), Fungi (mushrooms, yeasts, lichens), Protocista (paramecia, ameobas, algae), Plants, and Animals. Plants are divided up between nonflowering and flowering. Animals are divided up between invertibrates and vertibrates. You can remember that, can't you?

And you can remember that we are vertibrates, can't you? Because we have backbones. And that there are only five kinds of vertibrates: fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. And that we are mammals, primates, and humans. That wasn't so hard, was it?

Strauss makes it especially easy by giving lots of colorful examples along the way. And there are also those lovely, giant paintings by Margot Thompson giving illustrations of living things that fall into all sorts of different categories. There are good sections on changes to the tree of life, some species at risk, becoming guardians of the tree of life, and notes to parents, teachers, and guardians.

A child’s introduction to biodiversity, this book creatively illustrates the richness and organization of life on earth. Kids learn about the five kingdoms and how all living things are classified in one of those. For those kids who are interested in natural life and are ready to learn more about the organization of it all, I’d definitely recommend this.

Best Angular book I have read to date

I have read Pro AngularJS (Expert's Voice in Web Development) by Freeman and Mastering Web Application Development with AngularJS and this book is better than both. It follows google's recommended scaffolding, testing and structure. So if you want to learn Angular in a way that will translate well to others, then consider getting this book.

This book is great if you have a base understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. There are no chapters in this book on them specifically, which makes sense to me but for some reason the added chapters seem to be common in books like this. I doubt you would need any prior knowledge of AngularJS, though I had some when I read it.

The first chapter covers the obligatory project and it is a stock tracking app. Which for me was a nice change from the standard cart building project.

After that there rest of the book is just a good explanation of Angular, broken down logically into sections that relate to each other (read the chapter list for the breakdown).

The Authors are big on custom directives and filters, which is nice. I learned some new ways to work with Angular that work better than they ways I was using. He is also big on the word 'paradigm' for some reason. I swear it comes up at least 5 times a chapter.

There are a lot of gems in there such as when to choose a filter over a service or a directive over a factory etc. I had been using stuff based on the other 2 books I read that worked, but was not ideal and it felt fragile or clumsy at times. I now have a few more options that will work better depending on the need.

I have also read a lot of blogs on routes and SEO for SPA's and this book again provided me with the best explanations that I have had so far. There is also some solid intro stuff on yeoman, grunt and gulp.

If you want to learn Angular I recommend this book. I was going to wait for the one published by Manning but I am glad I got this now rather than wait.

This book covers the core AngularJS framework (v1.2), as well as the broad AngularJS/Javascript ecosystem, and even some server side Node.js packages (in the context of development with Angular), including

- package management (npm, bower);
- build and scaffolding (grunt, gulp, yeoman);
- js file/module loader (RequireJS, Browserify);
- testing (Mocha, Karma, protractor);
- search engine optimization (Prerender);
- UI libraries (AngularStrap, ui-bootstrap);
- mobile framework (Ionic);
- server communication (Loopback, SocketIO, Firebase);
- isomorphic js validation (Mongoose schema)

The book is very well structured and is suitable for first time read or being used as a reference. The example SPA in Chapter 1 (the largest example in the book), although built step by step, can be challenging for readers who are new to front end js development.

Even though the book uses Angular 1.2 for all the example code, the content of the book should be applicable to Angular 1.3/1.4.

What a Disappointment!

OK, I purchased this book based on other reviews. The impression I got was it was a good book for Angular beginners. That it concentrated on Angular and learning it,. Boy was I wrong. I want to learn Angular not:
Yeoman
Gulp
Bower
Grunt etc, etc, etc. The book relies on these tools and the versions are old. I waited a week and couldn't wait to began going through the book intending to do it chapter by chapter and follow along the way the authors intended. That didn't work out so well. In the first chapter they have you installing these other dependencies and the fun begins here. There are errors in installing some of these tools that require visits to StackOverflow to find out the workarounds. After investing the time to get, in this case Bowen installed and get Grunt server to run you embark on a journey to get services and then install more stuff.
Boom, that's when I gave up.
By the way I've been in software development for 20+ years and ain't no noob when it comes to learning new tools and technologies.

Bottom line, if you are looking for a primer on Angular then this book isn't for you. I wanted a path to learn Angular and all this other stuff just gets in the way. If it all worked like it most likely did when they wrote the book this story might have had a different ending.

This is a great collections of short stories from surgeons and medical students who are in different places in terms of their careers and life experiences. I think it will give readers a pretty good idea of what's involved in becoming a surgeon/medical professional and also what the potential costs are to balancing work and a personal life in such a competitive field. I got this book for my college-aged daughter who has mentioned an interest in medicine. Part of me wants to encourage her but, another part of me wants to protect her from what I know will be a very stressful and difficult road to travel. As someone who has worked in healthcare for almost 30 years, I've met surgeons from all walks of life and I know, all too well, how all-consuming medicine can be. I wanted my daughter to hear a variety of perspectives in the hopes she might see herself somewhere amongst the many voices in this book. Thank you, Dr. John, for putting this collection of stories together.

I love this book because it explains the WHY behind good management. I know what happens when I use positive, immediate consequences, and I see what happens if I use threats or positional authority. This book explains the science of why different consequences provide different results. It also explains the power of discretionary effort. There are so many books that explain techniques. This book goes far beyond those as it describes the principles underlying all techniques. Once you understand the principles it is easy to understand why some things work and others fail miserably. Very good book. The biggest trouble you will have is deciding where to start in the application of the science. There are so many processes that can be improved.

Slow beginig, beautiful ending

When I went through the first few chapters of this book it seemed like it's going to be tough read. Too technical and without enough practical examples. However the second half of th book, last few chapters in particular were well worth the reading. I still wish there would be a bit more examples of positive reinforecement through real life stories. That's why I give it 4/5.

I recomend it to anyone who want's to learn about good leadership practices that are proven by science and not just another fad.

A good read for supervisors looking to become better supervisors

Very interesting read. Not finished with it yet and will re-read it. Was given a hard copy by my company (as I am classified as a supervisor) and purchased the Kindle version so I wouldn't have to carry the hard copy around. The author talks about the different types of reinforcement and how doing nothing can cause as much damage as doing the wrong thing. Look forward to finishing and learning from this book. I would also recommend
'Turn the Ship Around'. It would be a companion to this one when your finished. And if you like me 'Exercise Change' is a good book on what it takes to make changes in your life.

About the Author
Chan S. Park is currently a Professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Auburn University. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in industrial engineering from Purdue University and the Georgia Institute of Technology, respectively. Over his 25-year academic career, he has been actively involved in a variety of areas of research, teaching, and professional consulting. His work has been recognized internationally in the fields of engineering economics, strategic and economic decisions within service sectors, financial engineering (real options valuation), risk analysis, and capital budgeting. He also authored or coauthored leading textbooks on the related subjects, including Contemporary Engineering Economics (Prentice Hall), and Advanced Engineering Economics (John Wiley & Sons). He is the Editor-in-Chief of the journal The Engineering Economist and is a licensed Professional Engineer.

This text is -okay-

I think this book is alright. Honestly, it has a lot of text for how little content it actually covers. The international edition is identical to the hardcover 3rd edition, so buy it if you can just to save some money. The only things worth knowing out of this book are the tables in Chapters 2-4 (equation tables) and Chapter 6, buy vs. lease.
