About the Author
Yang Razali Kassim is a Senior Fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. Prior to joining RSIS, he was a senior journalist with the Singapore Press Holdings, serving as Regional Editor at The Business Times and before that, Principal Assistant to the Editor as well as Senior Correspondent, The Straits Times, including a stint as Jakarta Correspondent. He was also a recipient of a Pan-Asia Award in Journalism by Citibank. Trained in Political Science at the then University of Singapore (now the National University of Singapore), he was a Wolfson Press Fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge University and a Visiting Fellow at the Lowy Institute, Sydney. At RSIS, he is also a Senior Fellow with the Centre for Non-Traditional Security (NTS) Studies where he researches on non-traditional security issues including the politics and diplomacy of climate change, human security, particularly in ASEAN, as it relates to socio-political transitions, internal and cross-border conflicts as well as state-civil society relations in Southeast Asia. As a journalist, he covered major ASEAN meetings of political, security and economic ministers as well as the summits of APEC (the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation), ASEM (the Asia-Europe Meeting) and the WTO (World Trade Organization).

Central to History and Philosophy of Chemistry

Mendeleev is a giant in the history of chemistry. He was largely the architect and certainly the main protagonist of the Periodic Law paradigm that has stood as the basis of Inorganic Chemistry for the last 150 years or so.

What makes this work so valuable is not only that Mendeleev makes and argues his points very clearly, but also that he updated his various Editions by footnoting the text of earlier editions rather than altering or amending it. This enables the reader not only to follow the detail of his thought processes, but also the evolution of his insights and understandings.

The cover of this modern reproduction/reprint of the English translation published in 1901 does not indicate that this particular volume is Part 4 of 4 of the original work of well over 1000 pages. This is, of course, an important point for a potential purchaser, since the Amazon catalogue lists several different volumes with this particular author and title. Presumably they include the other three parts, but it would be nice to know which is which!

Chapter 16 is very useful in reviewing the fundamental issues relating to topical product stability. The section on packaging interaction and product/package compatibility is well covered. This is an issue very important, but often not discussed much by cosmetic formulators. The issue of chemical stability of active components in a cosmetic formula is an important one. This is not covered in this chapter. As the author correctly point out, (page 454), this is beyond the scope of this chapter and will not be discussed in detail . However, it would be useful to include a chapter in future editions a review of methods used for following the chemical stability of active compounds in formulations.

Chapter 17 gives an excellent overview on preservatives used in topical formulations, their limitations and uses. It seems scholars are yet burdened with the onus of attempting to rehabilitate Schönberg's reputation--which is an absurd endeavour since now we have virtually his entire oeuvre in fine performances on compact disc.
In other words, the music speaks for itself and auditors may take it or leave it according to their own subjective tastes, there being no objective question of Schönberg's absolute cultural significance nor of the essential quality of his art works.

In English, the four finest books on Schönberg remain those by Malcolm MacDonald, Hans Heinz Stuckenschmidt, Carl Dahlhaus, and Willi Reich; still, this new set of recently collected essays in the Cambridge Companion series is a worthy effort featuring historical criticisms along with deep musical analyses--though curiously apologetic in tone.

An enjoyable read for Schoenberg fans

The "Cambridge Companion to..." series, in spite of its name, does not cover all aspects of an artist's life and career. Instead, these volumes contain a series of papers by a range of scholars examining selected pieces or biographical periods. THE CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO SCHOENBERG, edited by Jennifer Shaw and Joseph Auner, holds 19 articles on the titan of 20th century modernism. Inevitably, not everything here will interest all readers. I'm just a fan, though with some knowledge of music theory. Papers like those by Richard Kurth (on "Pierrot lunaire") and Elizabeth L. Keathley (on "Erwartung") deal with more abstract critical theory. I don't care much for Schoenberg's first decade or so as a composer, so I skipped the material on his early years.

Ethan Haimo's "The Rise and Fall of Radical Athematicism" shows how from Op. 11 No. 3 to Op. 20 Schoenberg briefly flirted with abandoning motives and writing remarkably concise works. The paper charts Schoenberg's squabbles with his student Webern about who developed this perspective first. Joseph Auner's "Schonberg's row tables" discuss Schoenberg's methods of sketching twelve-tone works and contrast them with the more rigid formulations of later serialists like Babbit. "Schoenberg, the Viennese-Jewish experience and its aftermath" by Steven J. Cahn gives up an idea of Schoenberg's status as an outsider in Austria and his reasons for converting away from Judaism and back again.

Walter Bailey's "Listening to Schoenberg's Piano Concerto" chooses this mighty piece to demonstrate how, his reputation as an abstract brainiac apart, Schoenberg wanted the listener to hear with his heart as well as his head. Sabine Feist contributes "Schoenberg reception in America", a paper which overturns the myth that Schoenberg was neglected by charting the remarkable amount of performances he received in his new home. Richard Toop's "Schoenberg: dead or alive? His reception among the postwar European avant-garde" looks at what the Darmstadt generation though of Schoenberg, though I suspect most lovers of mid-century modernism will already know this trivia. Severine Neff's "Cadence after thirty-three years" charts the progress of the Second Chamber Symphony, Op. 38, a tonal work long abandoned by completed long after Schoenberg gained a reputation as an atonal composer.

About the Author

Karen E. Stine, PhD, is a professor of Biology and former dean of the School of Sciences at Auburn University at Montgomery in Alabama, USA. She has also served as the director of the undergraduate toxicology program at Ashland University in Ohio. She earned her PhD in toxicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Stine is a member of the Society of Toxicology and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. At Clemson University, Dr. Stine co-developed and co-taught a Principles of Toxicology course that was open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Her research interests are in the area of mechanisms of toxicity and focus on the role of stress proteins in cellular function and dysfunction. Dr. Stine has also authored or co-authored several research publications in the field of toxicology.

Thomas Miller Brown, PhD, is president of Genectar Com LLC in Whitefish, Montana, USA which conducts research in toxicology, genetics, and genomics, now focusing on pigment cell development in the common wood nymph butterfly as a melanoma model. He earned his PhD from Michigan State University. Formerly a professor, Dr. Brown taught Toxicology of Insecticides, Principles of Toxicology, and Insect Biotechnology. He also led the discovery of an actively transposing short interspersed nuclear element (Insect Science 16:219–226). He has published papers on the biochemical toxicology of organophosphorus compounds and on the mechanisms of insecticide resistance in insects. Dr. Brown has also conducted research at Nagoya University and Tsukuba Science City in Japan.
