On his way home after a long night’s work, newspaper editor Frank Spargo stumbles across a crime scene on Middle Temple Lane in the heart of London’s legal district. An elderly man lies dead in an entryway, his nose bloodied. He wears an expensive suit and a fashionable gray cap, but the police find nothing of value in his pockets, and no identifying documents of any kind.

Unable to sleep, Spargo pays a visit to the mortuary in the early hours of the morning and learns that a crumpled piece of paper has been recovered from a hole in the dead man’s waistcoat. Strangely, the name and address it bears are familiar to Spargo. Succumbing to his reporter’s instincts, he vows to get the story and help Scotland Yard uncover the identities of both victim and killer.

A Seminal Who Dunnit

I rate this novel 5 stars. I rate it primarily on originality, plot and pacing, and the ability to mask the identity of the culprit to the very end. This may be one of the most original crime novels ever written. I'm of the opinion that this may be the first ever "Procedural" type of crime story. Where the story is revealed bit by bit as the facts become available, and in a logical sequence that doesn't stretch the reader's credulity, while at the same time taking numerous twists and turns along the way. Anyone familiar with the style of CSI or Law and Order would easily recognize the way the story is built up. And the surprise ending? A surprise! What else could it be. You won't be able to figure out who the murderer is until the very end.

Though written in the third person, there is no omniscience at work in this story, all of the action is seen through the eyes of the main character, or, through what other characters say in his presence. We follow the main character through the story as he discovers the facts of the case, right up to the very end. This allows the reader to stay abreast of the story, with no marvelous intuition guiding the story to conclusion. This isn't Sherlock Holmes, or Hercule Poirot, summing it all up as simply a logical deduction to anyone with the ability to reason it out, no, this is a step-by-step resolution of the crime using clues to the story gathered along the way.

This is the best work by this author that I have read.

Good Old Fashioned Murder Mystery

I like this book on my Kindle. I fail to see any problems. I love the old mysteries and this was a great book at a decent price.

Very enjoyable romp

An immensely enjoyable detective romp, first published in 1919. The writing is sometimes a bit stiff and pompous, but the plot is satisfyingly dense, the mystery is intriguing, and the atmosphere and characterization (which are the point of the whole thing) are top-notch. My favourite was the old stamp dealer who exclaims, "You think and argue on modern lines -- which are, of course, highly superior."

Mezzotint is an intaglio printmaking process particularly suited to the rendering of tonal gradations that was used from the 17th through the 19th centuries to create reproductions of paintings. With the widespread adoption of photographic reproductive methods, mezzotint use shifted to the creation of original images. Wax, who is a mezzotint artist, has combined a history of mezzotint with instructions for artists who wish to work in mezzotint today. Like the mezzotint process, Wax's text is painstaking and requires patience to complete, but she provides a wealth of information on one of today's lesser-known printmaking processes. The volume is well illustrated and is suitable for interested laypersons and art historians as well as practicing artists.

The Bible for the Mezzotint

Not only is Carol Wax one of the greatest mezzotint artists alive, she has written the best history and lexicon for this fine and old printmaking technique. Reading this book will either make you want to make a mezzotint or purchase one.

Simply Fantasticor

This is a very thorough compendium of the history, technical and aesthetic issues surrounding this rich and surprisingly versatile intaglio process. As was mentioned in other reviews Ms. Wax is a master of the techniques and she is particularly adept and thorough presenting the essentials for making good grounds. This has been enormously useful to me in teaching this technique to my students. Most printmaking technique books offer, at best, a cursory examination of the process an are typically thin on important details like inks, wiping, papers, metal types, etc, etc.

The book is apparently out of print. I managed to purchase a fine hardback copy with a stamped "Columbus Public Library" on the paper edge from one of amazon's many used book partners for a very reasonable price. No university printmaking studio or program should be without this book, it's that good!

As an added bonus there is a wealth of historical and contemporary mezzotint works including those by Ms. wax and many, many others. If this wasn't such an esoteric art form I would recommend a new edition to include even more contemporary works.

Needed advice for photographers

This is a book that all photographers should read if they want to actually get paid what they are worth. This book is not full of pretty pictures, instead it is full of real advice on how to properly price your services and build a proper business. I especially love the worksheets which allows you to put your numbers in so that the results are not about some magical photography company but yours.

I am really happy that someone decided to take the entire mystery of photography pricing and dissect the content. The author has managed to break down the learning barrier into truthful nuggets of valuable information. Layering the knowledge so by the end of the book you can immediately implement is priceless.

About the Author

Don Hahn's name is synonymous with some of the most critically acclaimed animated motion pictures of this generation, including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast, (the first animated film ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture (and before the Best Animated Film category was established). He was also the associate producer for Who Framed Roger Rabbit, the groundbreaking 1988 film that pioneered new techniques for combining animation and live-action. His other film credits include Fantasia/2000 and Atlantis. He is currently at work on his next Disney animated film.

Just like going on an animation studio tour

[[VIDEOID:33184041]]This book is like a pass that will give you access to a tour in an animation studio. The tour guide here is Don Hahn, who has been in the animation industry for years, directing some popular movies like The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, etc.

Don Hahn brings us down to the production floor, visiting every department, talking about the people and their role in movie production. You may have seen many making-of videos from DVDs but this book is the one stop source to the introduction to animation.

The book introduces the process of animation from idea creation to the ending post production work. It looks at three forms of animation that exist today and talks about how they are created. They are the computer-generated, 2D hand-drawn and stop-motion production.

Included concept art, sketches, set photos, sculptures, storyboards, 3D renders and some discarded ideas are included. This is like walking along studio corridors looking at all the art pinned on the boards.

The roles and responsibilities of every crew working on the film is explained. In a sort of way, it's also a guide to finding what kind of jobs are available in the animation industry. For the longest time, I've been trying to find out what a clean-up artist does and now I know, which is to "clean up" characters making sure they are consistent in style.

For people interested in the animation industry or how animated movies are made, this book provides a very good introductory background.

So that's how they do it!

I've long been a fan of animated movies, enjoying the story and the art but also being fascinated by what it must take to get one of these movies from concept to the screen.
The Alchemy of Animation does a great job of pulling back the curtain and explaining the process.

This book would be well worth the price for the plethora of pictures alone. It includes images from all stages of the process from initial concept through the final versions used in the movies. While that is a great reason to buy the book, it isn't the best part. The book is full of insight and information about animation. In particular I appreciated the focus on the story as the key element, regardless of the art form chosen and the way that the differences and similarities between traditional animation, stop motion and computer animation are highlighted.

If you are a fan of animation, or are looking for a great gift to give someone who is a fan I strongly recommend that you pick up a copy of this book.

Melt My Heart

What an absolutely beautiful and enthralling retelling that takes your through Thomas's dark, hurting, playboy life, to a man who feels, cares, and loves like no man ever has! You can read this book by itself without reading The Sound of Salvation, but I highly, highly recommend reading both. They're so different despite being about the same thing. It is quite extraordinary! I deeply enjoyed Nadia's point of view in The Sound of Salvation, but nothing compares to reading Thomas's point of view. I said before that I need Thomas like I need air to breathe and this book solidified the fact that he is the perfect book boyfriend.

I.A. Dice did it again. She created this beautiful story that was much more intense and obsessively sweet. Thomas is a character that you will enjoy being in his head, seeing things from his point of view. He isn't perfect, but boy does he try.

I seldom come across a book that will leave me one hundred percent sated, but this book was everything a romance should be. Each of I.A. Dice's novels are complete masterpieces at taking you on a beautiful journey. If you're looking for a new book to read then grab this book, you won't be disappointed.

About the Author
William E. Ryan is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Arizona, where he has been a faculty member since 1998. Before moving to academia, he held positions in industry for five years. He has published over 100 technical papers and his research interests include coding and signal processing with applications to data storage and data communications.

Shu Lin is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, Davis. He has authored and co-authored numerous technical papers and several books, including the successful Error Control Coding (with Daniel J. Costello). He is an IEEE Life Fellow and has received several awards, including the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize for U.S. Senior Scientists (1996) and the IEEE Third-Millenium Medal (2000).

This book is very well written by two of the leading coding experts in the world. The emphasis is on modern iteratively decoded codes and heavily weighted toward LDPC codes. The LDPC codes have borrowed heavily from classical codes and have transformed themselves into LDPC code classes. The book is for the advanced graduate researcher and the practicing coding engineer. The book is not a coding cookbook, the state of iterative coding today is still in its adolescent stage. There are still interesting problems to solve and they are alluded to in the book and the advanced topics chapter. This is must reading for the coding researcher and those working on next generation communications at the physical layer.

Excellent coverage of modern codes, not a replacement for classic texts

This book does a great job of explaining modern channel channel codes. LDPC codes are given exceptionally thorough treatment, but the various types of turbocodes are also covered well. This book's explanation of EXIT charts is better than any other coding textbook that I've read.

This textbook is not a replacement for the classics like Lin and Costello. Its treatment of block and convolutional codes is enough to introduce the modern codes, but not especially thorough or rigorous. This book can be a great companion to Lin and Costello, which provides a much stronger mathematical background to coding theory and goes into classical channel codes in greater detail.

This book shows some details in LDPC codes and EXIT charts that you would not found in other literature. Another aspect that conduct me to buy this book was the Authors (William Ryan and Shu Lin) who are a reference in terms of channel coding and theoretical analysis. The book is organized in such way that you can improve your knowledge step by step. The details how to build modern LDPC codes are very didactic and self learning. If you have the chance to buy it do not hesitate. I strongly recommend this book. A must-have for parents who love to read

I found this book (new) in a children's bookstore and it has been an invaluable reference in finding books for my two boys. I was an avid reader in childhood (and remain so) but Michele Landsberg has a more British/Canadian perspective and there are books I missed--all of which I am enjoying now, reading out loud. The only downside is that the book does highly recommend some books that were out of print when it was published which leads you into further out-of-print searches. I've had great luck with Amazon finding these books (also, check libraries everywhere you go, some make great vacation finds). Ms. Landsberg has no patience for treacly children's books and the quick reads sponsored by tv and movie fans. A reference for parents who love to read and wish to pass that gift onto their children.
