For many, Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) represents the Surrealist painter par excellence, one whose work explored his own dream life, hallucinations, and fetishes in the process of objectifying the irrational elements of the unconscious. In this rare and important volume, the painter expresses (in his inimitably eccentric fashion) his ideas of what painting should be, expounds on what is good and bad painting, offers opinions on the merits of Vermeer, Picasso, Cézanne, and other artists, and expresses his thoughts on the history of painting.
In a blend of outrageous egotism and unconventional humor, Dalí presents 50 "secrets" for mastering the art of painting: "the secret of sleeping while awake," "the secret of the periods of carnal abstinence and indulgence to be observed by the painter," "the secret of the painter's pointed mustaches," "the secret of learning to paint before knowing how to draw," "the secret of the painter's marriage," "the secret of the reason why a great draughtsman should draw while completely naked," and many other Daliesque prescriptions for artistic success.
Illustrated with the artist's own drawings, this volume is a fascinating mixture of serious artistic advice, lively personal anecdotes, and academic craftsmanship. About the Author
Immediately recognizable by his flamboyant waxed moustache, Salvatore Dalí (1904-89) ranks among the most popular of the Surrealists. Best remembered for the melting clocks of The Persistence of Memory, the Spanish painter also worked in theater, fashion, and photography.

Bizzaro entertaining beautifully illustrated some technique

Not a practical guide (despite the title). Learn! How to sleep without sleeping, the correct way to point your mustache, how often to have sex with your wife and when, and a little note here and there on which colors to use and how to draw.
The best thing about this book are the illustrations (mostly pen and ink) which are amazing and reveal the true mastery of technique Dali had. He idolized Valasquez and thought his fellow modern artists were hacks. Picasso (fellow Spaniard) -- talented but misguided. Realism is the goal. That and flat paintings (look at the canvas at an angle to make sure your brush strokes aren't building up any ridges of paint).
Worth $10 fursure.

Great book for just after you've gotten some basics

This is a book on oil painting which is peppered with Dalinian absurdities and illustrations.
I like Dali's writing personality. But if you don't find humor in it, then just skip to the useful parts such as underpainting. I started using his advice for under and over painting colors ('glazes') and the results are wonderful. (soon to be posted on my website) He spells out very clearly how to do this. This is information that is not really spelled out in other books. Check out the oil painting - "Galarina" - of his wife which is reproduced in the book. Hundreds of hours of work.
Amongst some humorous and impractical "secrets" - making medium out of wasps, et al - there is some really sound advice directly from a master. How much would you pay to get two or three private lessons from him?
Humor, unique illustrations, great advice: I think Dali's book is a great bargain. I almost didn't write this review so that I could keep it more to myself!

Interesting and Esoteric

A unique tome, for sure. I find myself looking for tips from time-to-time - but keep in mind this book was written over fifty years ago and many of the materials that he uses are difficult to find, prohibitively expensive, or just plain wierd. And I love wierd. "the Slumber with a Key" is something I'll have to test someday, but I wonder if I'll ever have the time, space and inclination to construct a retrospective sequence of aranariums.
Of particular amusement is his "Dalinian Analysis" system of rating painters (he even rates himself) according to categories such as Genius, Composition, Mystery, Authenticity,etc. In short, he adores Raphael, Vermeer, and Velasquez; and chaffes at Picasso, Mondrian, and (with grace) really lets Cezanne have it, so to speak. Also amusing are the descriptions of various sympathy/antipathy relationships between counterparts found in nature.
A peculiar and inspiring work.

It's really scarey to know this is the most widely used economics book in colleges. But actually, it's scarey to know economics is taught period. How do you teach a subject where none of the people gaining PhD status in the discipline can agree on anything?

A lot of money for a little gain.

By its nature (a text book) this is very boring. Although boring, the material is presented quite well. However, the text won't be of much help unless you have a good economics professor to help you out with some of the material. I don't know why I bought this book, we never used it in class. This book isn't the best source from which to learn economics. A live person can probably help you learn more, and it may well be cheaper than this overpriced book.

Most Important Book I Read in College

As I pursue my doctorate in mathematics education and look back over the textbooks I've read over many years of schooling, I'd have to say that Samuelson's Economics--required reading years ago when I took Freshman microecomics--has had the strongest long-term influence on my world view. Concepts like:
-the way competition works to make an efficient but not necessarily equitable economy,
-positive and negative externalities (i.e., the inefficiency caused when I benefit but you pay)
have been critical in helping me understand the currents behind modern political and economic debates.
You need some comfort with mathematics (algebra and graphing) in order to get the most benefit from this book--but certainly anyone who did well in Algebra 1 has a sufficient background.
I'd recommend this book strongly for anyone interested in developing a deeper understanding of human affairs and society.

He has been developing in Java since 1996 and implementing Oracle Applications since 1997. Oracle E-Business Suite 12 Financials Cookbook

Overall the book has been a great read and I have to say although the target audience might be the end-user I feel it would be of great benefit to functional and technical consultants alike. The book has the following points that really do set it apart from other publications:

* Everything is clearly marked, with very well laid out screen shots and hence so easy to follow.
* It's succinct allowing the user to explore the various modules but also providing enough of a road map to steer in the right direction should the user lose track.
* The author focuses on important areas within the Oracle modules thereby helping the reader identify with everyday tasks.

The procurement section of the book was my favourite as it taught me a great deal and more importantly how it integrates with Oracle HR. I enjoyed the final chapter, `The End of Period Processing', as this details a number of exercises that need to be done at period end which once again aren't covered in such an iterative approach in most other publications.

Please note the publication is very basic so would suit as a refresher or as a reference guide. If you're a seasoned vetran of Oracle Applications you shouldnt need this publication or for that matter any other publication. For an introduction to R12 it's great.

I have not read the book cover to cover, but I have looked at a number of different chapters and all I see is navigation paths and screenshots that frankly I can get from the User documentation.

I do not find any insight or guidance. Very disappointing.

Books related to Oracle E-Business Suite are few and they all take the same form; a summary of oracle user guides. This book is no difference. It gives very basic functions of the applications with screenshoots.
