The truth about the UFO phenomenon

There was a time when I was undergoing tremendous confusion about the UFO phenomenon. I, like many people, wanted to believe that these ET visitors were here to help humanity. After all, there are so many books out there claiming that the wonderful space brothers from outer space have our best interest at heart. Many claim they are here to spiritually uplift humanity and to save us from the catastrophic times ahead. Then there is the common assumption that if ETs were harmful, they would have destroyed humanity long time ago. However, something just did not sit right with me. Something within me just could not accept these preferential assumptions. If you really start digging in the abduction phenomenon, by reading materials from Dr David Jacobs and Dr Karla Turner, it is dark and extremely shocking. People are snatched away against their own will, what is so benevolent about that? If another person broke into your home and , snatched you away and did horrible things to you, would you assume that they are helping you? No, in fact you would probably call the police to report a violation.
The Allies of Humanity sheds light as to what is really happening beyond humanities hopeful expectations that the ETs will somehow save humanity. It exposes the power of influence in the mental environment and manipulation, through what is called the pacification program. After reading this, I had no more questions, as they were ALL answered. It became crystal clear, and was able to see this UFO phenomenon with open eyes. I look back and ask " How did I not see this before? my god its so obvious!!" There is no outstanding conspiracy theory or blame here, this book gives the straightforward reality of the ET intervention, as it really is. A must read for anyone seeking for real answers

Why are they really here?

Most people acknowledge the existence of UFOs, and therefore of an extraterrestrial presence in our airspace. Many believe that humans have been abducted, examined and forced to take part in unexplained medical experiments. Many also speak of "space brothers" and of ET visitors who are here to save us and our planet from war, poverty and ecological disaster. Why are they really here?

If one accepts the premise that there is other intelligent life in the universe, one must ask why these entities would expend tremendous effort, energy and equipment to reach our earth. If we look at our own history as an example, and we ask why humans have expended effort, energy and equipment to visit new worlds, what do we learn? Did Columbus come to the Americas to share his peaceloving spirituality, or his knowledge of technology? Did Cortez bring peace and prosperity to the Aztecs? On a more modern note, does Wal-Mart bring economic security to communities and small businesses?

What has always been the fuel behind expansion and exploration? Unfortunately, it is usually the strong seeking to exploit the weak - for their land, their water, their oil, their workforce. Why would ET be any different? Do we think greed, empire-building and power-seeking are strictly human traits?

But there must be good ETs up there, too, you say. Yes, just as there are good humans. Are the good humans the ones who exploited Africa for gold and diamonds, America for land, wildlife and other vast resources, Iraq for oil? The wise and the spiritually advanced do not violate other people's sovereign rights by visiting their lands with no invitation, by kidnapping their citizens or by stealing their resources. But they say they are here to help, you argue. Of course they do. Do you think they will tell you they are here to help themselves?

This book is a wake up call for every human on earth. Columbus is coming back, and this time we're the Indians. Read the book. Learn what we can do to help people realize our earth is a gift, and that we must protect her from those who would take her from us.

LOserly book and press.

It's not at all I expected from a Cambridge endorsed book. It's FULL of errors both in concepts and questions (especially the MCQs which seem to be written after having smoked on something!) Hated it!!!!Total waste of money. I thought I'd get the one printed in the US but this has been printed by some loserly ''Replika Press" in India. Pathetically gross stuff. That press....I'd happily burn it down along with all the people in the building if I could. LOsers!

Smaller than i thought it would be

Did not go through the book topic by topic Yet. There seems to be adequate practice from the chapters that i looked at. I just assumed that because it's cambridge, the book would be bigger. The accounts textbook for CSEC is thicker than this is.

DAVID HOFFMANN, a Fellow of Britain’s National Institute of Medical Herbalists, has been a clinical phytotherapist for more than twenty-five years. He started his herbal practice in Wales, continuing at the Findhorn community in Scotland, and has been practicing in California since 1986. A long time activist in the environmental and peace movements, he ran for parliament in Britain for the Green party in 1983. He is one of the founding members and a past president of the American Herbalists Guild and is on the advisory boards of the American Botanical Council and HerbalGram. The author of seventeen books, including the highly regarded The Complete Illustrated Holistic Herbal, An Elders’ Herbal, and The Herbal Handbook, Hoffmann teaches phytotherapy throughout the English-speaking world and is currently a faculty member of the California School of Herbal Studies. He is also a visiting faculty member at Bastyr University, the California Institute of Integral Studies, the National College of Phytotherapy, and the Rocky Mountain School of Botanical Studies.

He started his herbal practice in Wales, continuing at the Findhorn community in Scotland, and has been practicing in California since 1986. A long time activist in the environmental and peace movements, he ran for parliament in Britain for the Green party in 1983. He is one of the founding members and a past president of the American Herbalists Guild and is on the advisory boards of the American Botanical Council and HerbalGram. The author of seventeen books, including the highly regarded The Complete Illustrated Holistic Herbal, An Elders’ Herbal, and The Herbal Handbook, Hoffmann teaches phytotherapy throughout the English-speaking world and is currently a faculty member of the California School of Herbal Studies. He is also a visiting faculty member at Bastyr University, the California Institute of Integral Studies, the National College of Phytotherapy, and the Rocky Mountain School of Botanical Studies.

A great resource!

I am not a scientist, I am just a normal person interested in Herbal Medicine and creating my own tinctures, salves, etc for simple at home remedies.

I was worried this book might be a bit over the top for me, but I was pleasantly surprised! While, yes, the first few chapters delve a bit deep into the chemistry of it all, I have found that the rest of the book offers highly valuable information.

This book is broken into several sections, and I've found lots of useful information in the sections pertaining to the HOW of Herbal Medicine - it tells you precise ways of formulating different remedies. Also, the fully in depth index looks at each herb and goes into detail on it's uses and best preparations.

Overall I am so very happy with this book. It's one of my major resources and highly recommend it!

On the Edge of the Abyss: Lost Youth, Lost Innocence, & Carnage

Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) was well established as a major talent by the 1944 THE GLASS MENAGERIE. By the end of the 1950s he was easily among the best regarded dramatists in world theatre. But although Williams continued writing until the year of his death, after about 1960 he found both critical and popular success increasingly elusive.

SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH opened in 1959 starring a remarkable pairing of Paul Newman and Geraldine Page and ran for about a year--but subsequent stagings and adaptations have not been as successful. A film version starring Newman and Page tampered with original script and emerged as stodgy instead of exciting; a major 1975 Broadway revival lasted fifty performances; and the play has not fared as well over time as such works as A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF. It is rarely studied and rarely performed.

SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH concerns a handsome drifter named Chance Wayne who has been picked up by a neurotic and has-been movie star with the unlikely private name of The Princess Kosmonopolis and the stage name of Alexandra Del Lago. After a drug-and-alcohol fueled road trip through Florida, the two have arrived at the semi-resort community of St. Cloud, the location of which is not specified but which from other geographic references seems to be on the Mississippi gulf coast.

It happens that Chance has specifically come to St. Cloud in the hope of reuniting with his teenage love Heavenly Finley. We soon learn that on his last visit Chance gave Heavenly a nasty veneral disease that ultimately resulted in a hysterctomy, and that Chance has been warned away by Heavenly's father local political power Boss Finley, a vicious racist who is behind the recent castration of a black man accused of seducing white women. Heavenly's Aunt Nonnie and Boss Finley's mistress Miss Lucy warn him away; when Alexandra Del Lago recovers from her stupor and finds that her come-back film was a success, she too urges Chance to forget his young love, accept the fact that time has passed it by, and escape with her to California. But Chance refuses to leave, even though he knows that his efforts are futile, and the play ends with the strong implication that he too will be castrated by Boss Finley's minions.

There are several difficulties with the play. The first is that the story is essentially a re-writing of Williams earlier ORPHEUS DESCENDING, which was a horrendous failure on Broadway in 1957 but which is nonetheless a noticeably better script. SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH is also somewhat awkward in its shifting between realism and theatricality, the plot is somewhat implausible, and the second act is weak. But perhaps the single most deadly problem facing SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH is that there isn't a likeable character in the entire play, with the possible exception of movie star Alexandra Del Lago, who ultimately accepts herself for what she is and has the good sense to walk away before the carnage begins. And this too is yet another problem with the play: we are never allowed to see the carnage, we are only left to assume it.

All things considered, SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH is not among the genuinely great Williams plays, and indeed Williams would write only one other masterpiece, the 1961 NIGHT OF THE IGUANA, before beginning the rapid slide into alcohol and drugs that sapped his talents. But oddly, the very problems with SWEET BIRD OF YOUTH are what make it interesting, challenging, intriguing; one longs to see a really good staging of it and thereby know for certain if it works better on the stage than it does on the page. Interesting, but newcomers to Williams' work would do better to begin with the more obvious titles.

About the Author
Ian G. Cumming is a professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of British Columbia. A member of the IEEE, he holds a B.A.Sc. in engineering physics from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. in computing and automation from Imperial College, University of London.

Frank H. Wong is a senior engineer with MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates. He holds a B.Eng. in electrical engineering from McGill University, an M.Sc. in electrical engineering from Queen's University, and a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of British Columbia.

Each author has worked in the field of Synthetic Aperture Radar for over 25 years, and has developed many of the SAR processing algorithms presented in the book.

There is now software available to process the data from the CD included with this book. The software will convert the data from the CD into images. The software works with both Matlab and Octave. The software is on the Mathworks file share site: [...] .

Everything you'll ever need to know about SAR processing.

This book is for professional engineers and/or graduate students in Electrical Engineering who need to know the math behind SAR processing. There are no code listings that you can mindlessly copy, however the math and signal processing is explained very thoroughly and in great detail. It covers most of the useful modern algorithms (RDA, CSA, omega-k, SPECAN) and gives the reader the foundations necessary to explore other methods (wavelet-based, time-domain, etc.) If you need to know how to process SAR data, this is the book you want to buy.

Not that useful, mostly equations

This book is not that helpful if you are trying to learn how to process SAR data. It does include a data file on the CD of raw SAR data, however, no reconstruction program is provided. It would be a lot more helpful if this book did a walk through with an example program so that someone who has no experience with radar would be able to begin reconstructing SAR images.

About the Author

Julia Angwin is the author of Stealing MySpace and an award-winning investigative journalist for the independent news organization ProPublica. From 2000 to 2013 she was a staff reporter for The Wall Street Journal, where she was on the team of reporters awarded the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for coverage of corporate corruption and led a team covering online privacy that was a finalist for a 2012 Pulitzer Prize. She lives in New York City with her husband and two children.

Interesting read with good tips for protecting your privacy.

This is an important book and I'm glad I had the opportunity to read it. For those of concerned about privacy, it's a useful read.
The book is structured like a memoir. The author was a reporter for the Wall Street Journal. Refreshingly, she's a married mom with two kids. I say this because, normally the people writing about government surveillance and privacy issues are single, white men. She begins the book with a brief review of privacy and government violation of it from the beginning of the republic to now. The rest of the book is taken up with her mission to retake as much of her privacy as possible and leave the smallest possible digital footprint.
She finds that it is no easy task retaking your personal information from the data brokers. We are constantly tracked while online. "Anonymous" profiles of people are assembled by these data brokers based on what websites people visit. Based on the information they collect, they'll present you with ads based on your presumed interests. More detailed profiles of people are assembled and used to determine what prices you see for say insurance or plane tickets.
This book was a real eye-opener for me. I took for granted that my moves online were tracked, but I had no idea to the degree which it is done. Most troubling is this data industry is completely unregulated. Once they have your data, you cannot compel them to reveal what they know or to delete their data on you. The only exception to this is your credit score.
I dog-eared and underlined quite a few sections in this book because she has practical tips for minimizing your exposure. I hope that if this book goes to a paperback edition, she'll assemble some of the more useful tips into a single section at the end of the book.
I think the author's conclusion to her book is a bit Pollyannaish. She argues that pollution used to be much worse in the US (an example she sites are rivers bursting into flames, and that for the most part rivers are much cleaner). Pollution is a non-specific problem like the privacy problem, but people got together and encouraged Congress to pass laws that prevent the dumping of chemicals in our rivers. I disagree. I think people have gotten too inured to having little privacy. I see things getting much worse and staying that way. People voluntarily join facebook and are happy to share nearly everything about their lives (I'm looking at you people that post pictures of your food).
My one complaint about this book is her brief reference to bookstores. "Similarly, I used to go to my local bookstore and buy books in cash. Now, all the bookstores are dying, and Amazon is my local bookstore." If you order on Amazon because of the convenience or the prices, fine, it's understandable. But don't pretend like you would still go to your local bookstore if it hadn't closed. You stopped going because of the uber convenience of Amazon. Furthermore, this author lives in New York City, and there are no independent bookstores left in New York City, really?
But aside from my tirade on this minor thing, the book is excellent and I would recommend it to those concerned about their privacy.
I received an advanced reader's copy of this book from the publisher. So take that for what you will.

HONESTY CAN BE AN UNPLEASANT WAY OF LEARNING THE TRUTH

In an age of drones, spy satellites, internet espionage, GPS and cell phone tapping conducted by most of the worlds leading nations (and also many international criminal organizations) ... how can we decent individuals protect our privacy? You may be shocked at how little is actually left available to us as a result of this book's well-researched and outstandingly informative presentation. On one side there is a legitimate need for our governments to protect us from terrorism, identity-theft and international scamming. At the other end is the reasonable desire for most individuals to demand a right to privacy and individual freedoms. At what point, exactly, should collective societal safety trump individual rights? As you will discover in this excellent book, there is a very fine line of difference that separates the two. So how do we protect ourselves? The author has provided a thoughtful and potentially well-constructed answer to this difficult challenge. It is one that can work and involves participation from us all. The more people who are aware of this strategy - the better we will all sleep at night.

Should be required reading for all Americans

Privacy is a hot topic in the news of late. This book goes right to the heart of this issue. The writing is excellent. Julia Angwin speaks from and describes her own experiences with all aspects of the subject. She places her story in the context of her life and her own family. I appreciate this personal touch and the relationship to real life. Too often non-fiction books of this sort present a logical and scholarly analysis of the problem that is difficult to relate to one's own life. This book does not do that; it is relevant.

I am a technically savvy person only to an average degree. But I could tell from her discussion that the author is not seriously techie about any of the subjects she discussed. Advanced dissertations on the topics in the book was not what I was looking for when I bought the book, and if that is what you want, this is not the book for you. However, if you want to understand how privacy in your life has been impacted by government and industry, then this book is a must read.

Excellent Analyses of Ancient International Relations

Paul Collins has written an impeccable book, and its strength lies not only in its careful analytical summations of known ancient Near Eastern history but also especially in its attention to international relations in the time period from the Late Bronze Age to Neo-Babylon. Collins has done justice to what happened in Mesopotamia at the same time as in Egypt and how these regions reacted or responded to each other, with detailed critical understanding of the ebb and flow of power dynamics between these regions (when one was strong, the other usually weaker; when equally strong, a clash was inevitable in the Levantine buffer zone). While I agree with another reviewer that selective cultural highlights would make this book even better (e.g., Gilgamesh only receives a few sentences) - although also possibly making the book too long - this is not its stated historically purposed purview. While I also agree that integration of illustration and text or discussion of illustrations therein, adding to its excellent captions, might improve the book, its many beautiful and iconic images (in keeping with British Museum Press high standards) are lavishly ample and greatly representative of the cultures therein. I will certainly use the book in my next Stanford course on the Ancient Near East, and I hope a paperback edition is forthcoming for university students, for whom it will be the current definitive text.

An excellent historical overview

This book does an impressive job of pulling together the threads of the diverse histories of the ancient world into a coherent fabric that illustrates the relations of these kingdoms to one another. For many readers it will introduce peoples about whom they may know little or nothing, and show how their histories fit into the better known histories of lands such as Egypt and Greece. This book will be of interest to any who have studied any particular ancient civilization and wondered how it fits into the larger tapestry of ancient history.

I have only one small problem with this book (and it is a very small one): The author's insistence on using the term "Iraq" rather than "Mesopotamia" throughout his text. He explains it thus in his Preface: "The term Iraq (a name applied to the region of the modern country from at least the sixth century AD) is used in preference to the Greek term Mesopotamia which is becoming less meaningful for younger generations of readers." For someone like me, seeing "Iraq" used 2000 years too early in the context of Mesopotamia is both jarring and distracting. I also submit that avoiding the term "Mesopotamia" is not the best way to combat the trend of it "becoming less meaningful." However, as I said, it is a small point and does little to detract from the overall usefulness of this very useful work.

A Straightforward Political History

From Egypt To Babylon narrates the political history of the early Middle East and eastern Mediterranean from 1500 BC to 500 BC (roughly, from the Hittites to the Persians,) using the so-called Low Chronology for the earlier dates. The main focus of the book is on kingdoms and empires, major rulers, wars, alliances, and trade. Cultural matters, such as literature, art and religion, are mentioned, if at all, only in passing. The book does include captioned photographs of objects in the British Museum collection, but these are independent of the author's text.

In only 200 pages, many of them partly occupied by illustrations, it is hard for any author to do justice to a full millennium of Ancient Middle Eastern history. The result in this case is mostly a laundry list of kings and empires, but such frameworks are important; readers who would be satisfied with that, could certainly consider buying this book.
