About the Author
Christy Ford Chapin is an assistant professor in the Department of History at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. Her areas of research include political, economic, and business history as well as the history of capitalism. A key question driving her research is how the blending of public and private power has created a distinctive form of capitalism - American capitalism. Chapin has won numerous awards to support her work, including the John E. Rovensky Fellowship in American Business and Economic History and a Miller Center for Public Affairs Fellowship. Her work has been published in Studies in American Political Development, the Journal of Policy History, Enterprise and Society, and the Business History Review.

The third edition of this comprehensive collection of oratory through the ages is appropriately edited by former presidential speechwriter Safire—a man who knows firsthand the importance of putting together the right words for the right moment. But many readers will no doubt skip his prefatory lesson in rhetoric and go right to the speeches themselves. The selections range widely through Western history, from Pericles’s funeral oration to fallen Greek soldiers in the Peloponnesian War, to Tony Blair "exhorting his party to fight terrorism." History has yet to pass judgment on the greatness of the most recent speeches included here, but Safire shows a broad-minded, bipartisan inclusiveness in collecting the words of Democrats and Republicans, conservatives and liberals, history’s losers (Sen. Robert Taft opposing war crimes trials after WWII) as well as its victors. And several of the speeches he includes deal with politics only indirectly: such as Louis Pasteur’s paean to scientific education, the Dalai Lama’s sermon on the "Philosophy of Compassion" and Salman Rushdie’s description of a life "Trapped inside a Metaphor." This is an invaluable reference for writers and speakers, students of history and those who simply appreciate great oratory.

This new edition of Safire's book, originally published in 1992, retains all the speeches in the first edition and adds 20 new ones, such as Pope Urban II launching the crusades, Bob Dole remembering Richard Nixon, and Colin Powell on racial hatred. Safire's criteria are subjective?a speech is included if he thinks "it's great"?and the tone of his unhelpful introduction is one of strained cuteness. Most collections of speeches focus narrowly on particular subjects such as American or classical speeches, with few attempting, like Safire's, to cover all times and places. In fact, The Guide to Reference Books lists only one: Brewer's ten-volume World's Best Orations, published in 1901. Not surprisingly, there is virtually no overlap between Brewer's 350 and Safire's 220 selections. Safire's book is not really necessary for libraries owning the first edition, but it is a good addition for those lacking Brewer's or in need of modern speeches. With an excellent index.?Peter A. brilliant compilation and analysis by safire

As a compilation it is probably up there with the classics; it certainly isn't limited by genre, time, space, or ideology. And it has most of the classics, just to make the rhetoric professor comfortable in using it as a sourcebook.

The real gems are safire's comments; they are the most pleasurable parts of the work. His writing is so clear, yet sufficiently nuanced that one can't pin him down as playing favorites even when one knows that he would find the speaker or the speech (or both) completely reprehensible.

See, in particular, his comments to Rabbi Stephen Wise's speech at a Lincoln Memorial ceremony. It is the type of material than one can truly savor and enjoy.

This is the speaker's cook book. Every great speech since the Sermon on the Mount seems to get a listing, each a beautiful little inspirational recipe for our own fumbling, stuttering, trembling efforts. To cap it all, Safire's editorial contribution is brilliant. He follows his hypnotic introduction with concise and balanaced analysis for each speech. If you are looking for something stirring for the Scout jamboree, something special for cousin Harriet's wedding, or that little extra for Pastor William's Sunday service this is the book for you. I couldn't put the book down. Highly recommended.

The Role of Individuality

In the current discussions about the "stagnation" or "decline" of our Western cultures and their related economies, this work is one of the few that provide some clues to the "missing link" in the role of individuality in the incredible advances and modernization of Western civilization, stemming from the Industrial Revolution, its origins in England and its ultimate spread to America and to other parts of Continental Europe.

The inferences from the scholarship in this work fit into the more recent studies of those historic phenomena: "Bourgeois Virtues" and "Bourgeois Dignity" by Deirdre McCloskey (which are available on Kindle).

The recent works: "The Great Stagnation" and "Average is Over" by Tyler Cowan and the even more recent contrary views of Edmund Phelps in his "Mass Flourishing" will lead to a discerning reader to think about the role of individuality, the decline or recession of that role in our society today (as noted by Michael Oakeshott's essay "The Masses in Representative Democracy" contained in his "Rationalism in Politics").

Those with a serious interest in understanding the broad cultural shifts over extensive historical periods, and the effects now being noted in our own times, may also note a link of understanding individuality with the work of Emmanuel Todd, particularly "Causes of Progress," which is currently out of print and probably difficult to find.

This is a work of a scholar of history and a great deal of the detail in the text concerns the nature of the scholarship and investigations supporting conclusions that are at odds with what were broad spread assumptions of the similarities of the social groupings in England to those on the continent and to those encountered in later periods in less developed areas of the world. However, one can read through that detailed material rather rapidly and recognize that it does support the conclusions of the distinctions and differences in English social order during the periods under study, which preceded the Industrial Revolution, but were undoubtedly the groundwork for its establishment in England.

English Exceptionalism and the Great Tradition

In this book, the author examines the nature of English society during the five centuries prior to the Industrial Revolution, emphasizing the key differences between England and other nations. Citing numerous studies of medieval English life, he challenges the now entrenched theoretical framework (i.e. the "Whig" interpretation of history) originally promoted chiefly by Macaulay, Marx and Weber in which all societies are placed at various points along an inevitable development path, beginning with primitive feudalism and ending with modern capitalism. In place of this theory, he posits a theory of English exceptionalism, the idea that there has indeed been something special about England. He shows at length how medieval England fails to fit standard definitions of "peasant" society and in fact displayed the distinctive marks of individualism as early as the 13th century. Macfarlane doesn't claim to trace individualism to its roots (admitting that requires further study, although he suspects Montesquieu was right in assuming the English adopted it from Germanic roots, citing Tacitus' On the Manners of the Germans, which describes this "beautiful system [that] was invented first in the woods" based on absolute individual property), only that it predates (and in fact influenced) the Renaissance, Reformation and Enlightenment, events which are typically called upon to explain its emergence (he notes that some recent scholarship concedes some roots lie deep in biblical and classical times). The English tale of Robinson Crusoe (drawing on cover) embodies this seemingly uniquely English (in medieval times) tradition.
The author acknowledges that the established view is especially appealing to our modern hope for development in the third world (improving life from harsh, "nasty, brutish and short" to humane, mobile and affluent with loving, nuclear families) and also offers the attractive notion of "progress" from "lower" to "higher" forms of societal organization.
The primary implication of his thesis is that there is no necessary set of evolutionary stages from feudalism to individualism, from hierarchy to equality. Rather, these are alternative systems, which may coexist in time. Further, the nuclear family system, far from being a recent and transient development (as many have claimed), is ancient, durable and flexible, its simple molecular structure very likely allowing societal change to proceed rapidly in areas such as industrialization and urbanization. The theory sheds light on why market liberalism has failed to take root in the third world.
While Macfarlane traces the roots of Western individualism and capitalism to the early 13th century and suspects Germanic roots before that, his thesis ties nicely into the notion of the Great Tradition, defended by Lord Acton and others (see M. Stanton Evans' The Theme is Freedom for a modern defense), which asserts that these traits, along with libery, progress, popular sovereignty, science, the rule of law and many other Western values are actually God-given fruits of the Judeo-Christian tradition, beginning with the ancient Israelies and tracing through classical times and are definitely not recent inventions of modern rationalist man.
I give it four stars for fascinating conclusions and implications, although the extensive discussion of source evidence, while necessary, may be tedious at times for some readers.

OK read, but of limited usefulness for most people

I guess I wasn't clear with myself on my expectations when I bought this book. I wanted--and expected, based on the title--a book of tips on surviving and thriving alone. And it did address that, kind of, in a limited way.

First of all, I have to commend Barbara on her clear, fluid writing style. Easily readable.

I also want to say that there are some useful tips in here as far as making your space your own, not leaving holes in your life shaped like your ex, taking time to expand yourself, and really just building a life you are happy with, instead of building an artifice designed for two.

My two biggest issues with this book:

1. A lot of the practical tips may not work for the average person...much of this reads as "I was sad so I did this particular activity which did not work, and I learned this particular lesson from the experience," and a lot of the options open to celebrity women of a certain age just aren't viable for most people. If you generalize, there are still some nuggets to be found, I suppose.

2. My major beef was that the majority of the "solutions" she proposes to not feel lonely in solitude boil down to "If you feel lonely when you're alone, go find people to spend time with." That's pretty much antithetical to what I was looking for and, again, what the title of the book alluded to. If I wanted a primer on having platonic friends, I would have bought that book.

Consider it a fireside chat with someone who experienced loneliness and found her own way over it, based on her specific lifestyle. You may find some useful tips--I found one or two--but if you are looking for a general post-breakup guidebook or a triage manual, I'd look elsewhere.

Lonely no more

I broke up with my fiance after deciding that the marriage didn't seem right. It was my first time in 7 years to be without a boyfriend.

At first, I was skeptical about how this book could help me since it seemed more like an autobiography than a manual.

Despite my doubts, this book turned out to be my mantra, especially the first chapter where Barbara Feldon discusses loneliness. One of the key observations was that some people think that they can get rid of loneliness just by enduring long boughts of it. However, she said that enduring loneliness won't help because contact with other humans is our lifeblood.

After being alone and then working on finding friends, I find this so true. Think about your happy memories. Isn't it based upon people or friends? Mine are, and I am much happier to find human support.

My other favorite chapter is the chapter on financial matters. The reason that I like it is because she explains that money means freedom. That just rang so true to my life.

Anyway, I took the advice in the book. I am not lonely anymore. I have a lot of friends now. I don't have any lovers now. I am happy, and my life is healing from the sores of insecurity and sadness that unhappy relationships can bring. Thanks Barbara for your wonderful insight. I wish you the same happiness that I have.

lots of great quotes, brilliant material

This could have been a superb biography of Reed. Access to friends and enemies, lots of great quotes, brilliant material. But overall, disappointing. The writing was a little clunky, but the main objection I had was Sounes' overtly judgemental voice. I came away from this book thinking: "you really didn't like him". I would expect some opinion, of course, but a more objective view from a biographer. Let the interviews speak for themselves. Use the material to portray a complex and, yes, difficult and sometimes (arguably) nasty person, whose creativity, talent and output made him more than a bad-tempered speed freak from Long Island. This could have been a thoughtful exploration of the creative demons, but it fell short. And the superficial dismissal of Laurie Anderson as the girlfriend, then wife? An unfair portrayal of an important artist in her own right.

Get to know the man who made the music

This book is both outstanding and not enough, what do I mean by that? This book will introduce you to almost all aspects of the life of Lou Reed as a man. Whom he loved, the way he was, the drugs he took. It will provide you with a great understanding of what happened where to whom and more or less why. So if you are curious to learn more about the man, this is a great book which is engaging and witty. However, it lacks any serious discussion of the music of Lou Reed. So it's a little like reading a biography of Lucian Frieud which almost doesn't deal with his paintings. I don't know why that is but this should not be a reason not to buy and read the book. If you love the music, you already know why you love the music. This is just to know the man who made it.

About the Author

Randy Knight taught introductory physics for 32 years at Ohio State University and California Polytechnic University, where he is Professor Emeritus of Physics. Professor Knight received a Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley and was a post-doctoral fellow at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics before joining the faculty at Ohio State University. It was at Ohio State that he began to learn about the research in physics education that, many years later, led to Five Easy Lessons: Strategies for Successful Physics Teaching and this book, as well as College Physics: A Strategic Approach, co-authored with Brian Jones and Stuart Field. Professor Knight’s research interests are in the field of laser spectroscopy and environmental science. When he’s not in front of a computer, you can find Randy hiking, sea kayaking, playing the piano, or spending time with his wife Sally and their six cats.

Disappointed too!

This was definately sparse on the recipes. It is very basic (and I was a bit surprised to see that in the publication info at the front of the book, it's also listed under "juvenile literature"). There is good info on Vietnam, it's customs, people, etc., but a full half of the book concentrated on that and a few silly things like describing the term "boil". Definately not enough recipes. A grand total of 24 recipes, including how to cook rice and recipes for simple sauces. I'm disappointed with this (and the book "Cooking the Thai Way" which I ordered with it) but hate to return things so I'll just have to make the dozen or so recipes that interest me. Then get a nice, comprehensive Vietnamese cookbook where I can preview it before buying! This was my first online book purchase...

this is a children's cookbook

This really is meant to be a cookbook for children. There's a page towards the end that warns you to turn your pot handles towards the back of the stove so "younger brothers and sisters" don't bump into them. When chopping vegetables, it tells you to use a cutting board as opposed to chopping them in your hand. The recipes are basic, quick and easy. Unlike more involved Asian cookbooks that call for all sorts of sauces and vegetables that you have to go to an Asian market to find, the most obscure ingredient this book calls for is fish sauce, which you can find in most American supermarkets (although more authentic fish sauces can still be found at Asian markets). As a result, these probably aren't the most authentic recipes possible, but they don't look bad in terms of a starting point. I look forward to trying them out.

If you have a child who is interested in trying to cook different cuisines, he or she might enjoy reading this book and trying out the recipes. Make sure they have access to the appropriate cooking utensils, like a wok, and they'll have fun trying it out.

It's a children's book

This is part of a series of books "Cooking the XX Way" and they are children's books. The series is excellent and each book offers and introduction to the culture along with good, simple recipes. This book in particular is wonderful, with a cultural introduction and a handful of straight-forward recipes that introduce cooking techniques as well as the cuisine of Vietnam. Try the stir-fried Cauliflower; it's wonderful and quite authentic.
