Appetites: A Cookbook, by Anthony Bourdain, Laurie Woolever

Anthony Bourdain is a man of many appetites. And for many years, first as a chef, later as a world-traveling chronicler of food and culture on his CNN series Parts Unknown, he has made a profession of understanding the appetites of others. These days, however, if he’s cooking, it’s for family and friends.

Appetites, his first cookbook in more than ten years, boils down forty-plus years of professional cooking and globe-trotting to a tight repertoire of personal favorites—dishes that everyone should (at least in Mr. Bourdain’s opinion) know how to cook. Once the supposed "bad boy" of cooking, Mr. Bourdain has, in recent years, become the father of a little girl—a role he has embraced with enthusiasm. After years of traveling more than 200 days a year, he now enjoys entertaining at home. Years of prep lists and the hyper-organization necessary for a restaurant kitchen, however, have caused him, in his words, to have "morphed into a psychotic, anally retentive, bad-tempered Ina Garten."

The result is a home-cooking, home-entertaining cookbook like no other, with personal favorites from his own kitchen and from his travels, translated into an effective battle plan that will help you terrify your guests with your breathtaking efficiency.

Review
“In what might be his most accessible book yet, Bourdain reveals his “Ina Garten-like need to feed the people around me” with a terrific collection of recipes for family and friends.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))

“Bourdain is back with his inimitable voice-funny, foul-mouthed, and unapologetically opinionated-in this tightly curated collection of recipes…a cookbook that should be on every library’s food shelves.” (Booklist (starred review))

“APPETITES, in addition to presenting an eclectic, expletive-laden portrait of one’s family’s fare, is also a really great cookbook.” (BookForum)

Fantastic book! Delicious! He's just as strongly opinionated as you're hoping. Great range. Interesting photos.
By Jennifer Guerrero
Who doesn't love Anthony Bourdain?! This book is fantastic! He's just as strongly opinionated as you're hoping. It's a collection of global recipes that he thinks everyone ought to have under their belt. There's a huge range, and everything looks fantastic. There are really interesting and colorful photos throughout. The binding and paper quality are excellent.

Pictured below:
1) Goulash. It was wonderfully flavorful, and very different and much more produce heavy than any other Goulash I'd tried before. The smoky essence of paprika is filling our home. And the Barq's rootbeer accompanying it is his suggestion. :)
2-3) Macaroni and Cheese. I posted a photo of his intro letting you know, quite clearly, what does not belong in mac and cheese. LOL! Four kinds of cheese with plenty of cayenne, mustard, and Worcestershire. Delicious!
4) Ratatouille. Divine. His method is very different and it is fantastic!
5) Acai Bowl. It's pretty much a smoothie in a bowl with garnishes. Yummy 5 minute breakfast.
6) Roast Beef Po' Boys. It's one of those two day recipes, but oh so worth it. That's a great sandwich!
7) Chicken Satay with Fake-Ass Spicy Peanut Sauce. Fantastic, and I love the presentation. Party food!
8) Budae Jjigae ingredients. When I was at the Korean grocery store, I saw a few people who looked lost and frustrated, so I thought I'd post a pic in case anyone's new to these ingredients so you'll have a visual of what you're looking for.
9) Budae Jjigae. It's a Korean army stew that he calls "the ultimate dorm food", loaded with Spam, kimchi, hot dogs, fermented chili paste, ramen, baked beans, etc., cooked in an anchovy, kombu, and mushroom broth. When I read this recipe, I could hear Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park, "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think whether or not they should." The final tally was 1 out of 4 liked it in this house.
10) Book placement for my amusement. In Medium Raw, he dedicates a full chapter to just how much he can't stand Alice Waters, so I *had* to.

As a fun treat, I ordered a copy of Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook at the same time. It's a collection of his wildly inappropriate, and very cleverly written angy rants. He's so funny. He really lets us have a glimpse into his head. A chapter is the perfect dessert after trying out his recipes. I handed my husband, who does zero cooking, a paragraph to read. Ten seconds in, he started cracking up, grabbed his wine, and headed for the couch with my book.

I can't wait to try out the rest.

I'm a fan so....
By Nancy M. Gunning
This is so much fun to read, it was like Bourdain is talking to me on the phone, very enjoyable on a rainy Seattle afternoon. He says it's family recipes so I get it, we have similar family favorites. Loved his take on basic comfort foods and will probably try them all. My basics needed an upgrade and a reset. Easy cooking

I love this book
By Jed Powell
I love this book! So many recipes across a wide range of skill levels. I've been trying to get more creative in the kitchen, now excuse me I need to go fetch some duck fat.

Also, I think the pictures are fantastic. There's really only two types of real men imho, those who have looked an animal in the eye while it gives it's life for your sustenance, acknowledging the brutality of natural existence with thanks, and vegetarians. So if your grossed out by seeing a picture of a severed boars head, stick to eating your McChicken in the closet.

The Female Nude: Art, Obscenity and Sexuality, by Lynda Nead

Anyone who examines the history of Western art must be struck by the prevalence of images of the female body. More than any other subject, the female nude connotes `art'. The framed image of a female body, hung on the walls of an art gallery, is an icon of Western culture, a symbol of civilization and accomplishment. But how and why did the female nude acquire this status?
The Female Nude brings together, in an entirely new way, analysis of the historical tradition of the female nude and discussion of recent feminist art, and by exploring the ways in which acceptable and unacceptable images of the female body are produced and maintained, renews recent debates on high culture and pornography.
The Female Nude represents the first feminist survey of the most significant subject in Western art. It reveals how the female nude is now both at the centre and at the margins of high culture. At the centre, and within art historical discourse, the female nude is seen as the visual culmination of enlightenment aesthetics; at the edge, it risks losing its repectability and spilling over into the obscene.

Review
`... this is a book which will be universally welcomed ... clearly written and beautifully paced, it does not avoid the difficult aspects of the theoretical and philosophical underpinning of even the most commonplace utterances on art forms seen as productive of contemplative pleasure and excited arousal.' - Marcia Pointon, Times Higher Educational Supplement

A Comprehensive look at the Implications of th Female Nude
By Audrey Bruner
This book reviews previous scholar's understanding of the nude, including an extremely insightful look at Kenneth Clark's The Nude and Berger's work on the nude, illuminating many areas where their theories revealed disturbing social views.... it also incorporates philosophy from a wide range of areas, providing the reader with a comprehensive look at why and how we respond to the female nude while exploring a wide range of explanations. it becomes an extremely valuable lesson on what makes us comfortable and the social implications of all the things we naturally find disgusting. By trying to strike at the core of some of the attitudes towards the female body, she also critiques many current feminist trends that she feels perpetuates the problem and directs us to a clearer understanding of what is needed to view the female body with somewhere near equal respect to the way we view the male body. Before reading this book I honestly thought feminism was silly and that in modern society men and women were close to equal. This book opened my eyes.....wide.... not only about women's studies but also about many of the tendencies of the human mind and i have continued to reference at least one of the ideas it introduced me to in most papers i have written since reading it.

Why I Didn't Like This Book Very Much
By Dai-keag-ity
I've said it before, feminists are too often their own worst enemies. Not only do they apparently presume to speak for all women, as perhaps subconsciously does Ms. Nead, but they frequently take a platform that is both dour and too stringent. Her contentions here in The Female Nude are extreme. She is all-but critical of sexuality itself, all but denies that there is any non-sexual beauty in the human body, chides lust as an institution (no, I could not type that with a straight face) and contrary to her goals of championing women she in fact attacks women much more ardently than most any man ever would. Really this is not an overview of western female nudity in art and photography at all. There's little to be learned here, and the overall tone to this message leaves you feeling like you've just sat thru a sermon, or at best one of those college lectures where the professor was a bit too dogmatic in her approach to conveying the subject matter. Heck, even the photographs in here were bad choices. Nead won't be able to market this to either voyeurs or the intellectually curious. This book seems intent upon punishing its reader and is yet another "get the message in first" example of attacking rather than studying; of overtly delivering a message instead of neutrally expounding upon what could have been an engaging topic.

This is NOT a Feast for Your Eyes
By A Customer
Nead's book examines the male gaze throughout history in the canon of visual art. She thoughtfully takes a feminist approach to deconstruct the representation of the female body in the nude.

"A Jailhouse Lawyer's Manual" is one of the best prisoners' rights and prison litigation books around. The book helps prisoners understand what their rights are, what constitutes a violation of their rights, and how to litigate when their rights are violated. While more New York state prisons oriented, this book is very useful to prison litigants in any prison system or in any jurisdiction.

"A Jailhouse Lawyer's Manual" exhaustively presents the following information:

Learning Your Rights
How to File a Lawsuit and Learn About Your Case
How to Attack Your Conviction or Sentence
How to Attack the Conditions of Your Imprisonment
How to Attack Your Conviction, Sentence, or Prison Conditions at the State Level
General Health and Safety Rights in Prison
Issue-Specific Rights
Addresses of Federal Courts, New York State Prisons, and Federal Districts
Filing Instructions and Addresses of New York State Courts
Addresses of New York District Attorneys
Directory of Legal and Social Services for Prisoners
Glossary
Latin Term Glossary

One of the parts of this text which is particularly helpful to prison litigants is their "Section VIII: Issue-Specific Rights." In this section they present very targeted information concerning religious freedoms in prison, rights of prisoners with disabilities, special issues for prisoners with mental illnesses, special information for LGBT prisoners, security classification and gang validation, parole, rights of incarcerated parents, the rights of pre-trial detainees, and conditional and early release.

In short, any law library would be incomplete without a copy of "A Jailhouse Lawyer's Manual." This is the book for prisoners who cannot afford any other legal book. At over 1000 pages, divided into 35 chapters and 6 appendices, "A Jailhouse Lawyer's Manual" does the work of many, many expensive, specialty legal texts. If you know anyone in prison who is either appealing their sentence or fighting against abuses incurred in prison, buy them this book. It will help them by leaps and bounds.

Motor Control is the only text to bridge the gap between current motor control research and its applications to clinical practice. The text prepares therapists to examine and treat patients with problems related to balance, mobility, and upper extremity function, based on the best available evidence supporting clinical practice. This edition provides the latest research findings and their clinical applications in postural control, mobility, and upper extremity function. Drawings, charts, tables, and photographs are also included to clarify postural control and functional mobility, and laboratory activities and case studies are provided to reinforce key concepts. Videos on the back-of-book DVD examine motor control deficits, including deficits in postural control, mobility, and upper extremity function in different types of neurologic pathology (stroke, cerebellar pathology, cerebral palsy, and Parkinson's disease) as well as in balance impaired elders. These videos can be viewed in their entirety or in the following segments: impairments, postural control, mobility, and upper extremity control. This video enhances the clinical coverage found in the textbook.

food for thought and practice!
By jmf
i have been out of school and in clinical practice for 25 years, and though i take numerous cont ed courses, the rehabilitation field is rapidly changing. the phrase "evidence based practice" wasn't even in use when i was in school. Believe it or not, i've read this book on the beach and under shade trees on beautiful days, compelled by the models of motor control/movement/coordination that have emerged since my college days. clinicians who want to provide top notch services and who are a dozen or more years out of school may appreciate the opportunity to study new research, learn new assessments, and upgrade their practice. It may not be everyone's idea of a summer read, but it is definitely enlightening and worthwhile.

Good for practical and basic foundation concepts in postural control
By Kathy Simpson
I used for the postural control sections. Has been updated to be contemporary from earlier edition. It was the only text I could find that presented postural control at an introductory/practical level. Both authors are well-known authorities in their work on postural control, too.

Angels & Demons: A Novel (Robert Langdon), by Dan Brown

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Da Vinci Code comes the explosive thriller that started it all.
An ancient secret brotherhood. A devastating new weapon of destruction. An unthinkable target. When world-renowned Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is summoned to his first assignment to a Swiss research facility to analyze a mysterious symbol -- seared into the chest of a murdered physicist -- he discovers evidence of the unimaginable: the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati...the most powerful underground organization ever to walk the earth. The Illuminati has now surfaced to carry out the final phase of its legendary vendetta against its most hated enemy -- the Catholic Church.
Langdon's worst fears are confirmed on the eve of the Vatican's holy conclave, when a messenger of the Illuminati announces they have hidden an unstoppable time bomb at the very heart of Vatican City. With the countdown under way, Langdon jets to Rome to join forces with Vittoria Vetra, a beautiful and mysterious Italian scientist, to assist the Vatican in a desperate bid for survival.
Embarking on a frantic hunt through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals, and the most secretive vault on earth, Langdon and Vetra follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols that snakes across Rome toward the long-forgotten Illuminati lair...a clandestine location that contains the only hope for Vatican salvation.
Critics have praised the exhilarating blend of relentless adventure, scholarly intrigue, and cutting wit found in Brown's remarkable thrillers featuring Robert Langdon. An explosive international suspense, Angels & Demons marks this hero's first adventure as it careens from enlightening epiphanies to dark truths as the battle between science and religion turns to war.

Amazon.com Review
It takes guts to write a novel that combines an ancient secret brotherhood, the Swiss Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, a papal conclave, mysterious ambigrams, a plot against the Vatican, a mad scientist in a wheelchair, particles of antimatter, jets that can travel 15,000 miles per hour, crafty assassins, a beautiful Italian physicist, and a Harvard professor of religious iconology. It takes talent to make that novel anything but ridiculous. Kudos to Dan Brown (Digital Fortress) for achieving the nearly impossible. Angels & Demons is a no-holds-barred, pull-out-all-the-stops, breathless tangle of a thriller--think Katherine Neville's The Eight (but cleverer) or Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum (but more accessible).

Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is shocked to find proof that the legendary secret society, the Illuminati--dedicated since the time of Galileo to promoting the interests of science and condemning the blind faith of Catholicism--is alive, well, and murderously active. Brilliant physicist Leonardo Vetra has been murdered, his eyes plucked out, and the society's ancient symbol branded upon his chest. His final discovery, antimatter, the most powerful and dangerous energy source known to man, has disappeared--only to be hidden somewhere beneath Vatican City on the eve of the election of a new pope. Langdon and Vittoria, Vetra's daughter and colleague, embark on a frantic hunt through the streets, churches, and catacombs of Rome, following a 400-year-old trail to the lair of the Illuminati, to prevent the incineration of civilization.

Brown seems as much juggler as author--there are lots and lots of balls in the air in this novel, yet Brown manages to hurl the reader headlong into an almost surreal suspension of disbelief. While the reader might wish for a little more sardonic humor from Langdon, and a little less bombastic philosophizing on the eternal conflict between religion and science, these are less fatal flaws than niggling annoyances--readers should have no trouble skimming past them and immersing themselves in a heck of a good read. "Brain candy" it may be, but my! It's tasty. --Kelly Flynn

From Publishers Weekly
Pitting scientific terrorists against the cardinals of Vatican City, this well-plotted if over-the-top thriller is crammed with Vatican intrigue and high-tech drama. Robert Langdon, a Harvard specialist on religious symbolism, is called in by a Swiss research lab when Dr. Vetra, the scientist who discovered antimatter, is found murdered with the cryptic word "Illuminati" branded on his chest. These Iluminati were a group of Renaissance scientists, including Galileo, who met secretly in Rome to discuss new ideas in safety from papal threat; what the long-defunct association has to do with Dr. Vetra's death is far from clear. Vetra's daughter, Vittoria, makes a frightening discovery: a lethal amount of antimatter, sealed in a vacuum flask that will explode in six hours unless its batteries are recharged, is missing. Almost immediately, the Swiss Guard discover that the flask is hidden beneath Vatican City, where the conclave to elect a new pope has just begun. Vittoria and Langdon rush to recover the canister, but they aren't allowed into the Vatican until it is discovered that the four principal papal candidates are missing. The terrorists who are holding the cardinals call in regarding their pending murders, offering clues tied to ancient Illuminati meeting sites and runes. Meanwhile, it becomes clear that a sinister Vatican entity with messianic delusions is in league with the terrorists. Packing the novel with sinister figures worthy of a Medici, Brown (Digital Fortress) sets an explosive pace as Langdon and Vittoria race through a Michelin-perfect Rome to try to save the cardinals and find the antimatter before it explodes. Though its premises strain credulity, Brown's tale is laced with twists and shocks that keep the reader wired right up to the last revelation. (May)

Robert Langdon's first adventure as a symbologist-detective
By Lawrance Bernabo
I read "Angels & Demons" after reading Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code," and I have to say that I do not think it matters what order you read the two books although there are clear indications this book was written first (Brown does several examples of blatant foreshadowing, including early on the idea that one square yard of drag will slow a falling body's rate of descent by twenty percent). The two books are similar in that Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon deciphers clues to try and solve one murder while trying to prevent others in a mystery that involves the secrets of the Catholic Church. In this book a physicist is murdered at CERN, the Swiss research facility, and branded will a symbol representing the Illuminati, the centuries old underground organization of scientists who have a vendetta against the Catholic Church. The ancient secret brotherhood has acquired a devastating new weapon of mass destruction and intends to bring down the Vatican (literally).
Which book is better? My initial reaction would be that I liked "The Da Vinci Code" a bit more because so many of the clues were written out. When Langdon has to look over paintings, statues and other visual clues I find myself wishing Brown had supplied photographs in his book so that I could play along looking for clues (he does provide most of the requisite images at his website, but I did not know this until after the fact and I suspect most readers will not want to stop and go online to call up the photographs). Not that I had much success in my endeavors, but I did know that Leonardo Da Vinci wrote in his journals backwards so that I was ahead of Langdon for a half a page at one point. "Angles & Demons" is played out on a larger and more public stage than "The Da Vinci Code," and when you get to the conclusion of this novel you might find it a bit much, but that is one of the reasons they call it fiction.
The biggest question in the debate over these books seems to be whether Brown is attacking the Catholic Church in his novels, which strikes me a bit odd after reading "Angels & Demons" since the Vatican is the target this time around. This novel is more about the long struggle between science and religion than anything else, and the position Brown takes seems to be that the two are ultimately compatible. I did my dissertation on the Scopes "Monkey" Trial of 1925 and in the spectacle of Clarence Darrow cross-examining William Jennings Bryan that is codified by the fictional "Inherit the Wind," history has forgotten that the original position of the Scopes defense was that there Genesis and evolution were compatible. Consequently, I have a lot of sympathy for Brown's position and I think a careful reading of the text offers as strong a critique of science as it does of religion. Certainly that ideal is represented by the man who is murdered to start off the story and whatever faults in the history and theology of the Catholic Church might be discussed, there are just too many men of devout faith in the narrative to support the idea Brown is out to get the Church.
Nor do I have any real concerns with the extent to which Brown is playing with historical "facts." The whole idea here is to create a sense that the pieces of the puzzle fit together. I do not think for a second that these novels are true; all I need is to believe that they are plausible, so telling me that some statue's finger is pointed in the wrong direction if you go to Rome and see it for yourself is not going to matter to me because I understand how far the rules of the game apply to the real world. Even so, I think that Brown's factual foundation is more substantial than we will usually find under such circumstances, which would end up being a plus rather than a minus. Besides, I like all of the flashbacks to Langdon's discussions with his students (more classroom scenes in the future, please).
Solving the puzzles is the key enjoyment of these novels and that part of the creative process makes up for Brown's tendency to overplay his red herrings and to hide his true villains in plain sight. Ultimately the game matters more than the characters or the plot. As soon as you know that there will be four more murders you realize that at least three of them have to happen because the game has to be played out to the end, so it is not until the frantic end game that your attention really perks up and it is at that point that Brown starts unloading a whole lot of really big surprises on his characters and his readers. In the final analysis the point here is neither history nor theology, but to tell an exciting adventure yarn where the hero gets by mainly on his intelligence rather than good looks and/or weaponry. This is a hero I can actually identify with for once and that is fine with me too.

A genuine page-turner
By Kevin Lauderdale
Harvard professor Robert Langdon and CERN scientist Vittoria Vetra have just one night to prevent the Vatican from being destroyed by an antimatter bomb. Can they do it? Of course. But the fun lies in how and why.
A sample of antimatter has been stolen from physics center CERN by the Illuminati -- the all-powerful group made so famous by Robert A. Wilson's books. Here, they are represented as being an ancient order of scientists upset with the way the Church has treated science and scientists. (Me, I always liked the bankers-as-secret-force or blood-relatives-of-Jesus explanation of the Illuminati, but this will do.) This provides for plenty of science vs. religion conversations, and Brown does a good job with them.
ANGELS AND DEMONS is a fast, but satisfying read. It rolls along unstoppably, not the least of which because the action takes place over a 24-hour span. Even if -- as I did -- you guess what's really happening half-way through the book, you'll never guess what happens in the last 40 pages.
The book is laced with fun facts about electing a pope and the Vatican, like that St. Peter's bones are not in the golden casket in St. Peter's Basilica, but two stories under it. Brown knows the layout. And that the artist Raphael's last name was Santi. He also knows how marble statues were carved. Brown's no Irving Stone (THE AGONY AND THE ECSTACY), but he does manage to inform without being pedantic.
As Vittoria and Langdon race around Rome, we get quite a tour, with great descriptions. (Pick up a paperback copy next summer and bring it to Rome. Take the Brown tour.) What's interesting is that all the places and pieces of art in this book really exist. So Brown has played a version of the Sherlockians' Great Game by linking them all with his "history" of the Illuminati and their doings. No small feat.
Several of the plot elements have to be taken with a grain of salt. First, there is the fact that everyone in this book is absolutely amazed by amibgrams (these are words which can be ready the same upside-down as right-side up -- the book's dust jacket has the title in ambigram). They play an important role in the story, and everyone who encounters them is practically struck dumb the fact that even exist. They "seem utterly impossible." I guess no one else in the story (including symbol expert Langdon) remembers that OMNI magazine ran an ambigram contest in the 1980s and published dozens of the thousands of entries they received, I imagine that by now there must be a software program or web site that can make them for you (and make an acrostic that spells out your girlfriend's name). In short: they aren't that amazing. Then there are things like the fact that Vittoria (a physicist) isn't familiar with the classical four elements of earth, air, fire, and water. Come on.
Great literature? No, but you sure keep turning the pages to see what happens next.

An absolutely STUNNING Thriller!
By Jeff Edwards
My first introduction to Dan Brown was through his incredible thriller, 'The Da Vinci Code' and figured that I had missed out on his previous works, so I picked up 'Angels & Demons' the day after I finished TDVC. This is in every way it's equal. Every bit as compelling. Every bit as entertaining. Every bit as FUN. If you enjoy solving puzzles -- especially REAL ones, than Dan Brown is an author you NEED to get to know and F-A-S-T.
One of the things which made this book so instantly enjoyable was one of the main characters I already knew, Robert Langdon, world famous Symbologist from 'The Da Vinci Code'. Set aside some time to completely absorb this amazing tale, because once you start it, you will instantly be captured up in this highly addictive story. Robert is suddenly awakened early in the morning by the Director of the worlds leading science center, CERN located in Switzerland asking for advice. Robert is less than interested and hangs up when his fax machine spits out a picture which makes his blood run cold. Within a few hours, he is on a quick trip to Europe (heavy emphasis on the word 'Quick'). A murder has been committed. The victim, one of the most gifted scientist in the world has been brutally killed and the mysterious brand of the secret brotherhood of the Illuminati is left on his chest. NOT just ANY brand either, an Ambigram, a word which can be read the same right-side-up as well as upside-down. But Robert is convinced that the Illuminati have been disbanded for the better part of a century. Even so, his curiosity leads him on a quest which will take up the rest of the day and open up secrets long forgotten and better left buried.
Somehow Dan Brown has introduced the element of Antimatter into the story in such a way as to be totally believable. The substance in actuality has been manufactured in microscopic quantities. It's a power source if harnessed could benefit mankind in untold ways -- however with most things the opposite is also true. In this case Antimatter can also be a weapon of catastrophic proportions. Just a tiny half-a-gram of Antimatter if it came in contact with literally ANYTHING, even air, would create an annhialation equal to a 5 kiloton nuclear explosion. When some of this material is stolen from a lab in Geneva and turns up hidden somewhere inside the walls of the Vatican, the chase is on to find it before it decimates the headquaters of the worlds largest Christian Religion. Oh, and to throw a little curve ball to the plot, the Pope has recently died and the worlds senior Cardinals have gathered for Conclave, to decide who will be elected Pontiff. Along the way, we find out the Illuminati's ultimate goal of destroying the Catholic Church, and suddenly it all seems possible -- frighteningly possible. When 4 of the Senior Cardinals are kidnapped and threatened to be murdered one-by-one until the Antimatter goes critical, the stakes suddenly are as serious as the Church has ever faced.
Let me tell you this: NOTHING is as it seems, and NOBDY is safe from suspicion. I was absolutely convinced that one character was involved in the conspiracy and BOY was I WRONG. The surprises are fast and many, and the trip was one well worth taking. Catholics take note: You MAY be a little unsettled at how the Church is portrayed in 'Angels & Demons' but ultimately I believe the basic idea the author conveys is one of hope, and the Church provides that in many ways. I will be recommending this book (as well as 'The Da Vinci Code') to ALL my friends. HIGHLY recommended, and absolutely INCREDIBLY fun.

Deepwater Horizon: A Systems Analysis of the Macondo Disaster, by Earl Boebert, James M. Blossom

On April 20, 2010, the crew of the floating drill rig Deepwater Horizon lost control of the Macondo oil well forty miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Escaping gas and oil ignited, destroying the rig, killing eleven crew members, and injuring dozens more. The emergency spiraled into the worst human-made economic and ecological disaster in Gulf Coast history.

Senior systems engineers Earl Boebert and James Blossom offer the most comprehensive account to date of BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Sifting through a mountain of evidence generated by the largest civil trial in U.S. history, the authors challenge the commonly accepted explanation that the crew, operating under pressure to cut costs, made mistakes that were compounded by the failure of a key safety device. This explanation arose from legal, political, and public relations maneuvering over the billions of dollars in damages that were ultimately paid to compensate individuals and local businesses and repair the environment. But as this book makes clear, the blowout emerged from corporate and engineering decisions which, while individually innocuous, combined to create the disaster.

Rather than focusing on blame, Boebert and Blossom use the complex interactions of technology, people, and procedures involved in the high-consequence enterprise of offshore drilling to illustrate a systems approach which contributes to a better understanding of how similar disasters emerge and how they can be prevented.

Review
This book offers an extremely methodical approach to the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill. It is written in a concise, no-nonsense style, and couched in terms that a layman can understand. It is a highly original work with a well-structured argument, providing insight into the BP oil spill unavailable elsewhere. A thoroughly recommended read not only for oilfield professionals, but for all concerned parties. (Alastair R. Fleck, Shell Global Solutions)

Deepwater Horizon: A Systems Analysis of the Macondo Disaster shines a spotlight on the very high-risk situations that demand a consistent systems approach at all levels and from all parties. It demonstrates that―however popular or trendy they are today―streamlined, agile approaches don’t work in all situations. This book will be of value to business and engineering audiences, as well as anyone interested in technology policy. (Marjory S. Blumenthal, technology policy expert)

Deepwater Horizon is the definitive work on an event that not only had enormous ecological repercussions, but which also shook the oil industry to its foundations. Meticulously researched, the explanation of the disaster will be comprehensible to the interested layman, while numerous annotations add depth and detail for academics and professionals. The authors’ purpose is to analyze the event, detail the lessons learned, and thereby make everyone safer. The book fulfills the first two aims admirably, and the rest is up to us. (Andrew Kay, independent oilfield consultant)

Modern organization theory emphasizes the central role that organizational culture and structure play in outcomes, and though this book is not on organization theory per se, it is destined to be a classic case study in the field. A great deal of safety analysis focuses on searches for the root cause of accidents and disasters, but the Deepwater Horizon incident demonstrates that the causality of some disasters has a fundamentally multifactor nature. This book should be read by anyone concerned with safety of large complex systems. (Herb Lin, Stanford University)

Readers wanting to know just what happened and why in the Deepwater Horizon disaster will never find a better book. (Steve Donoghue Open Letters Monthly 2016-09-13)

'My God,' you find yourself saying again and again, 'so that is what that was all about.'
By bookworm
Confronted with the snarl of conflicting, contradictory and missing information that is the Deepwater Horizon, Boebert and Blossom wade in with sieves and scales, and after much sorting and weighing, make as much sense of it as anyone is ever likely to.

As you read Deepwater Horizon, many accounts written as the disaster was unfolding or in its immediate aftermath suddenly snap into focus, their implications finally clear. 'My God,' you find yourself saying again and again, 'so that is what that was all about.'

Boebert and Blossom lay out their terms in an introductory chapter. They are going to discuss the Deepwater Horizon as a "system," they say, a system so complex that no one individual or entity truly understood it. They will not be looking for a root cause of the disaster. Rather, they say, the blowout was a result of a combination of decisions, actions and component attributes rather than the result of a single act or failure.

Moreover, they are going to be taking a "scholarly" rather than a "judicial" approach to the evidence, since their goal is to understand, rather than to place blame. For this reason, none of the actors is named, even when they are as easily identifiable as the chief executive of British Petroleum at the time of the disaster.

Remarkably--given these and other narrative (or anti-narrative) decisions--Deepwater Horizon is an engaging and ultimately gripping read, at first illuminating and then impossible to put it down, even if you do have to go to work the next day.

To me one of the most fascinating elements of this story is how little information the crew on the rig actually had about what was happening more than a mile beneath them at the bottom of a hole in the ocean floor. The authors explain that, as far as physics is concerned, the well is essentially a big U-shaped tube stuffed with heavy drilling mud to prevent lighter hydrocarbons from rising to the surface prematurely. The crew monitored the hidden state of the well by comparing the amount of mud they were pushing down to the amount coming back up.

So mud is the ground truth, the ultimate finger on the pulse of the well. But during the procedure that led to the blowout--a crucial test of the integrity of the cement seal at the bottom of the well--the mud loggers couldn't, or thought they couldn't, monitor the volume of mud in the storage pits because other crew members were moving the mud from storage pit to pit before transferring it overboard.

What's worse, nobody did the predictive well-control calculations that would have showed the procedure they were undertaking would bring the well close to the edge; the point where the push of the mud would be unable to oppose the shove of the hydrocarbons. Nobody, in other words, was saying I'm not going to do something I don't understand, and everyone was just following orders in the belief that someone else understood.

Boebert and Blossom are right to insist are no heroes and no villains in this tragedy. Nobody quit his job to prevent the disaster but nobody acted maliciously either. But everyone who has ever worked in a large organization will recognize two 'types' in the story: those who know what they are doing and those who don't.

The person you hope is sitting next to you is a senior guy with a lot of experience, "the ability to draw conclusions from incomplete and conflicting information" and "the moral fiber to act." A few of them turn up in Deepwater Horizon, asking inconvenient questions and refusing to proceed until conditions are met (we've all been in that meeting, silently cheering them on). But the system rolls over them: They are bypassed, or don't have the authority, or are given the day off.

In any case they are vastly outnumbered by the other guys, the ones who don't care or don't care enough, who are just doing a job, just trying to get by. There's the vendor's rep who was known for 'just in time delivery' of test results, thereby depriving other people of the time to think them through; or the guy who created a design document consisting of lots of canned output by pushing the "generate report" button on the computer. We've all worked with people like this. silently fixed the broken things they leave in their wakes and fervently hoped never to work with them again.

What matters in the end, however, what saves the reader and comforts her, despite her smoldering anger at the stupidity of it all, is the narrative voice: the calm, thorough, persistent, intelligent voice of the authors and their unstated code of respect for competence, for intellectual honesty, and for taking responsibility.

To some extent what happened on the Deepwater Horizon was technology specific. For a science writer like me, one of the pleasures of this book is clarity of the descriptions of deep-water drilling technology, the many technical illustrations, and the appendices on topics such as cementing mechanisms or low returns during displacement. It's not really possible to understand what happened without getting into the details.

On the other hand, the Deepwater Horizon is also a type, or exemplar, of the many sporadically lethal "systems" that are part of our lives today-- such as the U.S. heath-care system, the Internet, the U.S. government, and the global climate system--all of which we seem hell-bent on running close to the edge.

We would all be better off is more of us thought, when we were under pressure to go forward assuming the best, that one day someone might write a book like this one about what we were doing.

so this book is reading more like a text book
By Gifford H.
I'm used to reading science fiction and fantasy, so this book is reading more like a text book, at least to me. I know the author is the reason for the purchase. It is interesting reading, some of the facts mentioned, I don't recall being mentioned by the news during the actual event.

great reference for children's attitudes
By FizzWiz
There is intricate detail for each age 4-14 within this book for the child of a particular age, and then the general child's interests and disinterests at particular age. Of course age is just a number and kids could be at different stages. Exceptionally talented or disabled kids would not fall under these age ranges, or may be lacking or excelling in maturity. There is no book to solve all cases, but it is a handy reference. Chip Wood does not mention these facts in the 1997 version of this book well if at all. Also, near the end of the book on p. 167 "passage parties" could be defined better, especially for non-religious people reading the book as people who would have such parties would probably be affiliated with a religion in some way. His comment on p.170 says that children at 14 "can't live [the general school environment]" and that we have to be able to teach them how to "internalize the capacity for fidelity." To a certain point, students make their own choices in their behaviors and what they want to or can learn. Teachers should have the right attitude and aim for all these things, but this book is slightly written so that it sounds confident, maybe overconfident in such a way that it leaves the impression that teachers can easily handle these social issues, but yet potential concrete solutions are not offered for these age groups. Rather, it tells you a typical person's tendencies by age for core curriculum subjects in general, but it could use even more. It's a pretty good book if it had to be written very fast.
